    Exclamation Base System Device

    Hi everybody.

I hope this thread is in the right place, as I don't like to post off topic.

I have an Acer Aspire 5520, with Windows 7 Ultimate x32 installed on it. I remember I had this problem right before I upgraded to Windows 7. Thinking that it might be because of the upgrade, I did many fresh installs since then, but my issue still remains.

Under the Device Manager, the following errors appear: Under each issue, I added the Hardware IDs, as I thought it might be a help.

This is translated into the Ricoh Card Reader not working. Under Device Manager, it has a yellow sign and whenever I insert a card, nothing happens. I need to add that sometimes, just out of the blue, when I turn the computer on, a message pops-up in the system tray and says that the card reader was successfully installed. Sure enough, upon inserting a SD card everything works fine, but all until the next reboot, after which the message comes again and says that the device was NOT successfully installed.

Here is what I did up until now:

    1. Reinstall Windows
    2. Update all the drivers from Acer's site.
    3. Tried to install the drivers for Vista and with Compatibility mode on.
    4. Even tried the XP drivers, with the Compatibility.
    5. Uninstalled the driver from Device Manager and rebooted the computer to allow Windows to install it by itself. At this point the message comes on on system tray that the driver is installing from Windows Update, then it fails.

Please help me. I honestly don't know what to do next.

I think that you have to disbale the UAC and check everything works fine or not? Usually by doing so, you wont get a pop-up every time you install a software and which could allow you to install something that you dont wanted. Other than that I suppose you will have to buy some another SD card.

    Re: Base System Device

Thank you for your answer, Baltazar!
    a message pops-up
by that I did not mean one of those messages that comes from UAC, but I meant the small message (I think that it used to be called "ballon" in XP) that comes from the tray in the lower right corner, next to the clock. For instance, when you want to unplug a USB device, a message comes there telling you that it is safe to unplug your USB.

When you insert a new device in your computer, a device that your computer did not see before, it wants to install its drivers. If you are connected to the internet, Windows will try to search for the drivers, if not then it will search its folders. That is the kind of message that comes up once in a while.

I will disable the UAC, nevertheless, then uninstall the drivers for the SD card, also I will uninstall the chipset, reboot, then install the chipset, reboot and then install the card reader, then reboot again. I'll see what it happens.

I will hate to have to get another card reader when I already have one in the laptop. Do you think it is broken? Then why would "start" working all of a sudden and only until the next reboot?
Do you think maybe it's a driver incompatibility?

There is a possibility that the drivers that you have may be corrupted or have some bu issue with it. It would be better that you get another fresh copy of the application. This may then help you out to get the issue to be sorted. Do check out.

    Re: Base System Device

Do you think the best is to use the drivers provided by the manufacturer of the computer (in my case, Acer), or the latest drivers from Ricoh! I noticed that, for instance, Nvidia released a new version of my chipset, 14.26, while Acer still recommends 13.13. What should I do in this case? Listen to Acer, or listen to nvidia, ricoh, etc? Do you think Acer recommends that driver, even though there is a newer one, or they are just behind updating their list of drivers?

Well, according to me you should go for the latest driver for your system. Because it is the best option to go for. I will suggest you to go for the new version 14.26. I do not have any idea why accer is suggesting for the 13.13.

    Re: Base System Device

Since the last post, I got another hard drive and I installed Windows XP and all the drivers from Acer and it seems like something is really wrong with my card reader because in XP I have the exactly the same problems. After that, I installed Windows 7 x64 this time, and the same problems here, too.

It seems like the card reader itself is broken or something like that. I just don't understand why once in a while it will start working again.

Any suggestions about this card reader? I will get an external one right away, but anything I can do with the onboard one?

    Re: Base System Device

I suppose if your Acer Aspire 5520 is under warranty then contact them and ask them to get it repaired or you can even ask for a replacement since it is a fault @ the card reader itself. In the meanwhile you can try to install the Ricoh Multi Card Reader Driver and check whether the yellow sign goes away or not, just give it a shot, download it from here.

    Re: Base System Device

Thank for the link, T.J., I am downloading that right now. My Acer is not under warranty any longer, so I can't do anything about that. I can only hope it will work somehow and use an external one until then.

    Thank for all the help!

    Re: Base System Device

Well, I tried, and it still doesn't work. I think something is physically wrong with the card reader, otherwise I can't even begin to understand why it is doing this. All my drivers are up to date, Windows' updates also etc. Anyway, I don't think there is any hope. Does, by any chance, anyone know IF there is any way I can try to fix this card reader by myself. Or do you think I'd be better off just leaving it alone and stick with an external one? I'm one of those guys who until tries everything - he can't sleep at night. It's a bad attribute, I guess.

    Re: Base System Device

Can you tell us the size of the card that you are using because memory cards over 2gb are classified as SDHC which often will not work with some drivers. To get the SDHC cards recognized on my laptop I had to source the drivers for the card reader separately from the manufacturers website.

I tried a 2GB SDHC that came with my camera, right now I'm trying a 256MB SD card - none works.

    Re: Base System Device

I also wonder why all of my 5 hardware issues are on the same PCI bus 1, device 4. Does that mean something? Is there any possibility that some kind of a cable is disconnected from a little board that supports these 5 items? Why do all 5 fail to install their drivers?
