AMD Phenom X3 720 OR Athlon II X4 630?

Hi to all, I am building a new computer which will be used exclusively for gaming. The configuration which I am thinking is :-

1. Processor :- AMD Phenom X3 720 OR Athlon II X4 630
2. Motherboard :- GA-MA785GMT-UD2H
3. System RAM :- 4GB OCZ DDR3 PC3-10600 1333Mhz
4. Graphic card :- XFX Radeon HD 4850 IGB DDR3

The operating system on the computer would be Windows 7. Therefore please suggest which processor amongst AMD Phenom X3 720 OR Athlon II X4 630 should be selected for the computer. Any suggestions about the topic are welcome.

As you are buying a computer for gaming, I would suggest that you buy a single core processor. Multicore processors have more than one processing core. These processing cores start processing all the applications together which may create problem while running the game. If a multicore processor is used for gaming then you will have to disable all the extra processing cores while playing the game. To disable the extra processing cores, start the game and then open the task manager. Go to processes tab and then right click on game process. Select Set affinity and remove the check mark from 1 of the CPU and click OK. You will have to follow this process, everytime you start the game on the computer which is running on multicore processor.

AMD athlon II 630 is a superior processor amongst the mentioned choices and I will recommend you to buy it for the computer. AMD athlon II X4 is a quad core processor whose performance is far more better than the AMD phenom X3 processor. Most of the game which are released, have a multi thread supports which means that the games can be played on the quad core processors without any problems. Hence the obvious choice between the two would be AMD Athlon II X4 630.

The AMD phenom X3 720 is better than the AMD Athlon II X4 in many ways. AMD Phenom 720 has more l3 cache memory which enhances the performance of the computer. Also Phenom X3 has three active cores which makes it good for multi tasking processes. When the AMD phenom X3 is overclocked and used its performance improves more than the AMD athlon II X4. Hence I will suggest you to buy AMD phenom X3 and then overclock it. After overclocking the performance of the processor is at par for gaming.

AMD ATHLON II X4 series of processors suffer from the bug which is related to the cache memory of the processor. Due to this bug the performance of the processor degrades a lot and hence it is not recommended for running gaming application. There is some problem with the L3 cache memory which is implemented in the processor and hence to make the processor work properly, it has to be disabled from the BIOS. L3 cache is responsible for the performance of the processor and when it is disabled, there is a significant fall in the performance of the computer. So I will prefer buying an AMD phenom X3 over AMD ATHLON II processor.

According to me both the CPU's are great and can be used in a gaming computer. AMD Athlon II X4 630 has less power consumption than AMD Phenom X3 720. On the other hand the Phenom processor can be overclocked and 4th core can be unlocked which makes its performance comparable to Athlon X4. The price difference between the two processors is also not much and hence you can choose between any of the processors without any hesitation.
