Dual Inline Memory Module or DIMM is a series of Random Access Memory (RAM) chips mounted on a small printed circuit board. Dimm is the most common now. 1 dimm means your system has one module installed. Its always better to have two dimms.
Performance won't matter. the only advantage to having 1 GB 1 DIMM is that you will have a slot open.DIMM1 and DIMM2 just mean slot1 and slot2 on the motherboard They are not diff types. As far as costs go, One dimm of the same capacity is obviously more expensive, as the ram density is higher than two dimms totaling an equivalent amount.2 X 1GB is better then 1 X 2GB.
Technically 2 DIMMS should be faster then just one single DIMM as the banks can be interleaved. DIMMs come in various standard sizes known as form factors. Earlier DIMMs came in sizes of 1.5 inches and 1.7 inches. If you get 2GB of memory in 2 DIMMs, then if you want to upgrade the memory later on, you have to replace one of the 1GB modules.
