    Installing 4gb of ram xp

    Hi all,
I am going to buy 4 GB ram for my computer. I am a game freak and i desperately want to install the same on my old OS i.e. windows XP. Can Windows XP support more that 4GB of RAM? Can i install it properly? Will it be recognized by xp?

    Thank you foe any suggestion.

There is no point installing 4 GB ram on windows XP. Windows XP can access only 4 GB ram. Some portion of a memory allocated for the partition. So there is space for 3gb ram i.e. less than 4gb. Windows allocates memory to PCI/PCI-E/AGP devices in the 4GB range. BIOS takes roughly the first 512K of the address range.

If you have 32 bit processor and 32 bit OS, it can address 2^32 addresses, it means it can give numerical "names" for 2^32 addresses. While your first MB will support installing 4GB of RAM, the upper 1GB is reserved for use by the graphics, so Windows XP 32bit only makes about 3GB available to use. Processor communicate with other devices by reading and writing memory addresses above 3Gb.

The amount of usable physical memory that will fit in the address space will depend on what peripherals you have installed. Check the following thread on using 4GB RAM in xp 32bit editions. If you are running 64-bit Windows, it will get recognized. Unless your motherboard fully supports 64 BIT memory addressing, and has 64 BIT mode drivers, you may run into the same memory limitations as a 32 BIT OS. 32 bit system can address 4 GB of RAM, and many 32 BIT motherboards allow you to install 4 GB of RAM.
