dual channel memory support

i have a Acer Aspire 5100 laptop. it comes with a 1 GB DDR2 memory of which 256 is set for video graphics, the balance 766 Mb is for use. i am using windows vista home premium, but my system works slow.
if i upgrade the memory to 2GB DDR2 , will it improve the performance.
one more issue is that i probably have 2 modules of 512 each in the two slots.
if i buy a 2 gb RAM, can i keep the other 512 RAM module.
since i have to take out one module in order to fit in the 2GB.
also i read somewhere that it is better to install 1 GB in each rather than a single 2 Gb module. my laptop supports dual channel memory support.
can anyone guide me regarding this

Dual Channel DDR structure uses Twin Bank mode, and requires two memory modules plugged into the appointed DIMM slots in order to enable 2 Channel DDR.

There is no such thing as Dual Channel DDR Memory Modules. Regular DDR is installed two modules at a time, each module controlled by a separate channel of the memory controller.
