AMD have, in my opinion, always been great. I will not be making the jump from my dual 3.0. I find that with my 260 216 sufficient for most games now. I am curious what AMD is gonna do 12 months from now with this whole x3 thing.

If you're not overclocking or just doing a little mild overclocking the stock cooling really isn't that bad. I'm using it right now on the 940 and I doubt it's any different on the 955. It's silent and I'm running 3.5GHz @ 1.44v max load puts me around 52C which is completely inside the safe limits.

The main reason to actually buy a Phenom II X4 955 BE based system is its price/performance rating. A recent and very well equipped ASUS M4A79T mainboard costs about CHF 220.- 4 GByte of DDR3 1333 MHz memory from Kingston you can get for about CHF 85.- and the CPU might cost about CHF 280.- Therefore you are able to buy a recent and quick quad core platform for about CHF 600.- If you want to buy an equivalent Intel based system with a well equipped mainboard you need to spend about CHF 900.- In this case the price/performance rating speaks very clear words in favour of AMD.

AMD is closing in on the performance lead of Intel CPUs. There are many applications where Intel’s Nehalem still has the undisputed edge but at the same time, especially in some of the game applications, the Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition showed itself as a formidable opponent of anything coming from Intel. Despite what we heard and read earlier, also the migration to DDR3 memory boosts performance but the benefits are limited at this point by the slow NB / L3 cache, this is the main area where AMD needs to focus with respect to performance since the memory and the CPU both can deliver more than what the NB bottleneck can handle at this time.
