Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 vs. Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650

    hi,
There is no such thing as "stability" in processors. Either processors work or they don't. i am Looking for a good gaming processor,Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 or Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 ?Which one will work best for app? Any recommendations and suggestions are appreciated.

It is hardly fair to compare a dual core with quads that are twice (or more) the price.

I have been trying to decide if a slower quad would offer better value than a faster dual core and from the benchmarks I have seen (mainly Q6600 v E8400) if it was used mainly for gaming it would not surprise me if the E8600 held its own even against much pricier competition.

As far as game preferences go, my suggestion is to consider a Quad if you play a lot of strategy games. Games like Company of Heroes, Sins of a Solar Empire, and especially Supreme Commander are all CPU leeches. These types of game often have to calculate the AI for hundreds of units, the movement of thousands of projectiles/effects, etc. A few of these games explicitly use a Quad (like Supreme Commander) though with all of them, I find they max out even my Duo @ 4GHz, so having an extra core or two to dump Windows and other processes on to would likely help. Not sure if it'd compensate for the lost clockspeed potential.

The 12mb L2 cache is definitely noticeable.

re: Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 vs. Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650

The Q9650 is an excellent overclocker (relative to other quads) - it will not easily (if at all) go as high as the E8600 may but even at 3.4GHz the Q9650 will offer framerates pretty much on par with the E8600 at 4GHz. FSX will use all 4 cores, especially if you like your addons, so a quad is the way to go.

The 8800 Ultra will be a very decent upgrade over the 3870x2. FSX does not benefit from SLI at all unless you run a 30" screen. The 9800GTX+ is also well worth a look.

So, get the 8800 Ultra/9800GTX+ and oc that Q6600 as much as you can! The GTX260 Core216 also offers pretty good price/performance ratios and may well end up being a better buy in the longer term if you plan to move with it across to i7.
