    question 8MB Ram missing!

I just upgraded my laptop's RAM to max capacity (2GB). Since the memory is shared with the onboard graphics controller (64MB), my system memory is shown as 1.93GB. If i add up the totals, i get:

    (1.93 GB = )1976 MB + 64MB = 2040 MB

    However, 2GB = 2048 MB

Where did the other 8MB go??

Or am i doing something wrong with the calculations!?

    Please advice.

Well basically your onboard video has borrowed about 8MB of memory from your RAM in order for it to perform better.

You can adjust how much RAM your video card uses in the BIOS. The solution would be to buy a AGP video card as this will come with its own memory therefore not having to borrow from your RAM anymore.

Dont worry - You are not short of your memory. However, the system always shows less memory than exactly what it is....
    by rounding off
For example, if one of your drives has a free space of 5144 MB (exactly), then it will show 5 GB instead of 5.023GB.....

OK, i get it...the system probably rounded off 1.93xx GB to 1.93 GB...thanks!

8MB of Ram is always shown less in Windows. Previously I was having 256MB Ram and in Bios showed 248MB. Even I had raised this doubt in front of my computer assembler about this 3 years back when my system was newly built. He had explained me something but I dont remember it now. I only remember that he said that 8MB of Ram will always be shown less. I guess it is used by System cache or probably as system memory.

Now in my new upgraded system I have 1GB of Ram and it shows 1016MB. Now you and I should believe this fact
