    ASUS P5Q PRO Memory Problem

    Hi guys

I recently just put together a system. Specs are as follows:

    -Asus P5Q PRO
    -Core 2 Quad Q9400 2.66
    -Gigabyte 1GB 9400GT
    -(2x) Kingston HyperX 2GB 1066 DDR2 RAM
    -Corsair HX620W PSU
    -WD 320GB HDD

I've got everything up and running fine (I'm on it as I type) but there is just one problem.

When I have the two RAM sticks in slots A2 and B2 (both black slots), my computer recognizes both of them and it runs at 3.35GB (due to 32bit Vista). However, when I have the RAM sticks in slot A1 and B1 (both yellow slots) my computer only recognizes one stick which makes my system only run at 2GB. I originally thought there was a problem with one of my RAM sticks but I tried running my system on just the one 2GB stick in slot A1, and my system booted up however did not run anything; no BIOS, no OS, nothing. Screen was just blank. I then tried the same stick in A2 and my system was running and it showed up as 2GB ram.

My question is; could it be a faulty A1 slot or is there something I'm not doing relating to what slots to put the sticks in or settings in BIOS?

    Help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Steve.

Re: ASUS P5Q PRO Memory Problem

The two memory modules need to be the same, although not necessarily the same size, to work with each other. What I mean is if one is, say, SDRAM Unbuffered, the other one needs to be the same.

let it scan your PC and then list modules that would be compatible with your system? Doing it that way comes with a guarantee to be compatible with your system or you can get your money back.

    Thanks for replying Peter.

My RAM sticks are identical. I purchased them as a kit (2x2GB). As I said, they are Kingston HyperX sticks.

How to I go about scanning my PC for a list of modules?

    Thanks, Steve.
