    Quad Channel vs Dual Channel

    hi,
I am using an ASUS P5E motherboard which says it supports dual channel RAM.i want to buy 2 (2x2GB) Kits which would both be dual channel and they would run at quad channel, Is there a way to make the RAM operate as dual channel?Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Quad Channel vs Dual Channel

A quad kit is nothing more than two matching pairs of dual channel memory. Therefore, if your motherboard supports dual channel RAM, it can run these in dual channel mode.
There is no "quad channel" mode, per say. It is simply a term to describe two pairs of RAM running in dual channel mode. They should be running in dual channel mode automatically.

I was using dual channel DDR, so it won't really be a difference. I went with 2 x 2 GB because for one, I realized that I wasn't sure if the motherboard that will be used even supports full quad, which if course it doesn't, so that made that decision easy.

Itll work fine, I thought that may be the Motherboard that has DDR3 RAM slots too but according to the specification it supports 'Supported RAM Speed PC2-6400, PC2-5300'. Make sure you use a 64bit OS to recognize the whole 4GB, with 32bit XP it'll only notice around 3gb

    hi,
no such thing as quad channel ram,4 modules is still dual channel.as for the difference, some motherboards do not like all 4 modules occupied, some you may need to increase the RAM voltage slightly to be stable or to maintain the same OC vs 2 modules.I'm using 4x1GB no problems though.

Generally 2x2GB modules are more expensive or have worse specs for the same money as 4x1GB.
