AMD Athlon Neo to fill the gap left by the Atom

AMD announced today at CES 2009 the availability of its platform for laptops ultra-fine, until now known under the code name Yukon. AMD's response to Intel Atom target a market, located between the ultra-portable economic Atom marketed in about 400 euros (netBook) and ultra-portable in traditional Centrino 2 sold more than 1 000.

AMD responds to an emerging trend that sees the creation of 12-inch laptops under Atom performance but limited to relatively high prices (like the Dell Inspiron Mini 12), sometimes those of traditional laptops entry. This new platform is expected to complete the vacuum that forced consumers to "make a compromise by choosing either full performance at a high price, the limited experience of a mini-portable low-cost," according Chris Cloran, vice president of the Mobile AMD.

The platform combines an AMD Athlon Neo (engraved in 65 nanometers), 690T AMD chipset and integrated graphics chip ATI Radeon X1250 graphics chip or a dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3410. It is therefore designed to integrate affordable machines with screens from 11 to 13 inches.

Re: AMD Athlon Neo to fill the gap left by the Atom

The typical Athlon processor for desktop form factors measures about 63 x 80 mm, with a die size on-board the package of about 120 mm2. The Neo package is 27 x 27 mm, which is considerably more convenient for netbook component designers to implement. Remember, there isn't yet a mass production market for netbook motherboards similar to that for desktops.

Segment occupied by the platform with AMD and comparative competition

Such machines are capable of such decode 1080p video. An internal presentation demonstrates that the platform AMD Neo to 1.6 GHz, while 140% cheaper, only 30% to 50% less efficient solution than Intel Core 2 Duo under 1 , 6 GHz operations transcribing audio and video. Intel Atom at the same frequency as it would be about twice as efficient as only 36% cheaper.

The first machines such platforms will be available from April.

The percentages given in the charts are completely fanciful, they do not correspond to observable results on these graphs. They were calculated by a pupil of CM2 or what?
