Hello I have an eMachines EL1200 desktop and i am looking to upgrade ram from 1gb ram to about 4gb. Can my computer even expand to 4gb ? What RAM will I need to buy ?

yes you can go up to 8Gb in DDR2. mostly you should go for DDR2.
You need to find out which type of RAM your motherboard supports and how much it supports.
You can get 4 gigabytes (if your motherboard supports it), but unless you have a 64-bit computer you'll only be able to use about 3 gigabytes (give or take). This is due to OS, hardware, and 32-bit integer limitations. This article explains it better.

eMachines can only go up to 2GB probably due to a cheap motherboard. It uses DDR2, so look for pretty much any speed of 240-pin DDR2 (1GB stick is your best bet.)
