Laptop Graphic Card Needed

Is it possible to add a video card to laptop externally as this cannot be changed internall after opening the laptop.
I have read about buying a PCI-E Adapter, and connecting the Video Card to the PCI-E Adapter, which is then connected to my computer.
How should i go about this ?

it requires an extra monitor and it's own power source which sucks, it won't be portable.

does that thing even exist yet? and how big does the monitor have to be... and i dont get why it would need another moniter cuz isnt it just routing the video to the notebook?
