Mac ibook Screen Blacked out

My Mac ibook has its screen blacked out. I'm thinking it may be of low shared memory,
user problem or the OS corrupted. But hw can I restore/reset the OS, is there a recovery option.
I'm new to using Mac.

How old is the Mac iBook? Is the screen black out permanent or does it happens at regular intervals, cause if it happens alternatively then can you go into the "Energy Saver" options in Preferences and see if it is ticked or not. If that isnt the case then it could be either the inverter of the lcd screen that might be at fault and you will have to take it for repair.
