Not getting enough FPS with Radeon HD 7870

Few days ago I have purchased a Gigabyte OC'd Radeon HD 7870. After installing it on my new build computer, I played GTA 4 for 2 hours. It seems to me that my system does not able to pass 1GB in memory without decreasing to 20 fps. Currently I have 2 GB of VRAM but I cannot use at least half of it also. The game lags hard and seeing much FPS drops. The drivers are up to date and I can play Battlefield3 without any problem and that is even with ULTRA settings hitting 70+ fps.

It seems to me that something has locked the Graphics card to the limit at 1 GB. I have heard that there are some mods which will allow you to overpass that limit. Even if you have less than 1GB there mods will overpass the limit. I don’t have such mods but you can find anywhere over internet. On the other hand you have to make sure that you have the latest version of Direct X installed. If there is ATI catalyst center, in which you can modify the settings anyhow to get the better output from the Graphics card.

In my case I got the satisfying results with Radeon HD 7870 is. With 5558 points in the performance of the preset 3DMark 11 and 1895 points in extreme settings but still in excellent gamer environment. The Heaven benchmark - a practical tool to measure the frames per second in different test configurations - also spits out very good results: All the measurements we have performed at a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and a high density of detail. In DirectX 9 mode, the graphics card comes to 57.9 fps, the DirectX 10 test results at 57.5 fps and use of modern DirectX 11 API, including tessellation, they still achieved strong 48.9 frames per second. Looking at the popular 30-fps-limit as "just playable" is the HD 7870 is always significantly higher.

I have also ordered the Radeon HD 7870 OC when it was still cheaper than the non OC version. Also, I think (personally) the additional power for the extra cost is justified. This is the largest version of the 78XX series. I choose OC version only for that reason that it guarantees to create the OC-stable clock. The only thing that version in the OC for a guarantee there is that it creates the OC-stable clock. It also creates on any HD 7870 if you do it by hand - that if you contact an absolute guarantee on the OC the card wants to have it is always better, the card without having to buy OC, and even to overclock - this creates, as I said each 7870 and can break it (if done correctly) nothing. I personally would buy the Saphhire non-OC and so that I can increase slight voltage by hand to 1050 + / - 50 MHz overclock.

I think that it would be helpful if we get other benchmarks as well. With the use of 3DMark you can at least get a better idea about your card but by running the games you would definitely know about the performance of the Graphics card. I do appreciate that you have selected this card. You should get biggest performance leap. If you have used previous series card then you will definitely know about this card’s performance.

The Radeon HD 7870 GPU with 1280 stream processors, led to the default clock frequency of 1 GHz whereas the Radeon HD 7850 GPU solution integrates 1024 stream processors, with clock frequency of 860 MHz Identical specifications of the two cards with regard to the video memory: there are 2 G bytes with modules GDDR5 frequency of 4,800 MHz effective, coupled to bus from 256bit amplitude. I am really not satisfied with this card. The HD 7870 seems like rather worse. If go higher than 1200MHz and 1.218v, I get BSODs.
