    Need a 120Hz 2560x1440 or 2560x1600 resolution monitor

I have a brand new Dell monitor at my place especially for gaming purpose but after having it fixed at my home I feel it too small, I mean I am not finding it big enough to be satisfied. 120 hz is fine but the resolution and the screen size is quite annoying me. Now I don’t think I should have went for a 120Hz 1920x1080 screen, its really very much small. But along with this irritation there are also some question going around in my mind. The first thing is that, is there any big screen monitor available with a good or average resolution.

If you ask me I would really want to go for a 27” or possibly a 30” monitor with some good resolution of 2560x1600 or if needed 2560x1440. Also I am expecting for a 120Hz with a decent and good colors. Now tell me is it possible for me to get such a dream product for myself. Are they not going to come up with such similar criteria fulfillment?

That’s an interesting question or I must say a thread. Anyways I would like to say that DP and DVI won’t have enough bandwidth in order to go further than 1920x1080 at 120hz until and unless they make another port or revision. Maximum resolution is 3840×2160×30 bpp at 60Hz which actually uses the same bandwidth as of 1920x1080 at 120hz. Also I am not sure with the following information but I heard that displayport rev 1.2 now a days has some approximate 18Gbit/sec which is quite enough for a 2560x1600x30bit@120Hz in CVT-R timings and also I know that the folk behind DVI has disbanded so therefore due to this reason there won’t be any more new version to DVI IIRC. You should probably have a look at Shimian or Catleap thread, I guess they won’t be hitting 120hz but somehow the Catleap is going to manage till 100hz which will only cost you around $375-$380 for shipping.

The biggest limitation factor with catleap is its graphic card whereas the Dual-link DVI do not have limitation but there are more video cards that has a 400 MHz RAMDAC which is probably not enough to get the resolution of 2560x1440 @ 120 Hz, you may probably require a 500 MHz RAMDAC in order to pull it off.

Also the ATI and AMD drivers have now implied the pixel clock limit of 330 MHz, this implementation is just for dual-link DVI. With the custom resolution NVIDIA's driver will allow you to go past that up to the RAMDAC limit of 400 MHz. and due to this exact reason there are people who do get 100 Hz on the catleaps. However one more thing I would like to tell you is that there are still lot of manufacturers who don’t even care about the highest refresh rates so therefore according to me there is no other choice or better option for you than the catleap.

Ok, so we can say that its better to go for a catleap in today’s time to full our necessary requirements or criteria but still there’s a question going around in my mind, is it possible to add a radeon hd 7970 and get it 95 hz. Head that if we use a dual-link DVI ATI and AMD driver actually ignores resolution that are beyond 330 MHz pixel clock boundary, so therefore in my case I think I can get up to 85 hz. Even this nvidia however can get 100hz by adding a custom resolution.

One of my said that he was able to hit 400 mhz limit on his ATI 5670 by using a powerstrip in order to control the pixel clock directly. Even now I guess that it was a RAMDAC as now days there are lot of video cards that has a 400 MHz RAMDAC. There must be something else that is restricting them to 40mhz if its not RAMDAC. Powerstrip allows us to set up to 500 mhz but actually the refresh rate somehow stops changing at around 400 MHz which ultimately gives a max of 101.865 Hz. The main issue is that the powerstrip is not at all allowed or be able to tell windows or the video driver about the new refresh rates and due to this reason it causes too many problems.

If we were suppose to use displayport in order to get and use 100hz on the catleap with an active dp to dl-dvi adapter, was there any possibility where the driver limits it for not using a DVI out. Is there anyone who have ever tried it or anyone is in plan for trying it with a 7970 when the catleap comes in. I somehow thought about this thing previously but I was not sure of the limits for the displayport, in fact I already once tried adding resolution with higher clock rates with the NEC EA231WMi that was connected through DisplayPort and then the driver ignored beyond 288 mhz which is very much downgraded than the dual link DVI limits. As far as I am concerned I know that the DisplayPort can have different number of lanes and the NEC have two-lane DisplayPort. This could be one of the factors.

People generally do suggest me to go for Achieva Shimian QH270-Lite QHD Monitor which is quite good and functions well but it lack certain things that are majorly required and necessary. For eg. This monitor was unable to achieve the higher refresh rates; these rates were 85hz ATI and 100hz Nvidia which was not so impressive. And even if you speak about catleap, having a displayport on this product in order to achieve 100mhz using an active dp to DI-DVI adapter is not workable. I strictly doubt whether there is any suitable DL-DVI adapter or not, in almost cases they have even failed to deliver 1920x1080@120hz. Rather you can go for the same catleap product but a specified model i.e. Catleap Q270 SE. this is seriously one of the best ones amongst their family but make sure that you get one without the speakers.

I don’t think there is any requirement of getting one without the speakers. I was having one with speaker and I must tell you that I was able to play it safe as until now I haven’t known anyone present with this speaker model confirming with the refresh rates. And if we talk about other display monitors like TVs, in that case even if a single feature is modified it means that there is surely a different electronic inside it.
There are some people who say that this model without a speaker still has a functional volume button and also the hardware is very much similar except for not having speakers attached or hooked up without a audio jack. Below are some of the main and importation features of this CATLEAP Q270 LED SE(No speaker Model), hope this might help you out with some important details:
    • Aspect Ratio - 16:9WIDE
    • Contrast - 1000:1
    • Brightness - 380CD/M2
    • Response time - 6MS
    • Angle - 178
    • Signal input - DVI-D Dual Link
    • Supply voltage - DC 24V/ 5A
    • Power Consumption - 63W(ON), 0.6W

I can give you the confirm certain things, recently I bought a new catleap display with speakers. I ordered it from Dream-seller. After I got this product the first thing I noticed was that it does supports 97hz and if you ever try to set it more or higher than what I mentioned, it would fail especially through nvidia. I have nvidia 9300. If your requirement IPS+97hz+$439, then definitely you must go for it without even thinking. The best noticeable thing is the GOD Games that looks beautiful and too impressive, I am sure once you play these games you are never going to switch off back to 1920x1080 or anything else as I did. You can also use a dp -> dl-dvi adapters or a 2x geforce or3x radeon if you need to run higher refresh rates in shimian monitors.
