    How to set up 2560x1440 resolution on HP ZR30w?

    Well I am having HP ZR30w. its having 30" IPS and it can be used at the resolution of 2560x1600. Now I am looking to use 2560x1440. I tried to setup custom resolution from Nvidia control panel but it did not worked for me at all. As I am trying to set 2560x1440 and screen simply became black for next 15 seconds. Any ideas will be appreciated.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

    As far as I know HP ZR30w is having capability to display 2560x1600 as well as 1280x800 resolution. Current version of the graphic cards are having an option to provide support to arbitrary rendering resolution in order to get output resolution rescaling. You will be able to set game resolution to 1080p and GPU will simply render to 1080p image. Then it will rescale to 1600p and it has been sent to monitor. ATI as well as NVIDIA having support for GPU scaling.

    Well from the Nvidia Control Panel you have to add the resolution from Change Resolution menu and click on Customize. See whether it is showing scaling list. Also see that you have checked Show 8bit and 16bit resolutions checkbox.

    The thing custom resolution feature of Nvidia is getting broken and fixed by after every single release. However if you wanted to add custom resolution feature manually then you will need to edit the registry. I recommend below mentioned steps to get the same.
    • Simply run regedit from the Start run box and look for the following registry key.
    • Code:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4 D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    • Here all the video card drivers are being stored over here. you have to look for NV_Modes string values. Its having kind of encoded list for all the monitor resolutions which has been permitted by the drivers. You will be able to add any desired resolution over here.

    I think your problem is that you are trying to paint 2560x1440 image on 2560x1600 canvas as its timing the monitor support. I tried below mentioned solution and it worked for me.
    1. From Display go for Adjust desktop size and position. Here you have to see that scaling mode should be set as ‘no scaling’ now you have to perform scaling set to GPU.
    2. Second thing which you have to check out ‘Override the scaling mode set by games and programs.’
    3. Again go for Display you have to change the resolution. To do the same you have to go for Customize and insert appropriate value over there.

    You should take care of the thing that is all the drivers are reset. You can do the same by disabling and re enabling video card from the Device Manager. You can also have multiple entries for the video card in case you are having different kind of PCIe slots. Also you should edit all the instance of NV_Modes.
