How useful is GPU boost when load is low?

How is GPU boost useful when the load on the graphic card is low? Is this feature useful to keep the framerate low even when the graphic card can provide more framerate? Is it useful to increase the number of benchmarks that a graphic card can achieve? How useful is this feature for people who play heavy games. I know graphic card boost is more different from CPU boost, but how useful is it?

Graphic card boosting works as an alternative method for overclocking. This process helps to save the wattage that the graphic card needs when used under load. Using the graphic card boost, you can save up to 50 MHz of wattage with graphic card under heavy load. I know that difference won’t make much difference, but the framerate remains stable and you won’t notice any lags.

I have graphic card which is boosted. I am using it along with adaptive V-Sync. Graphic card has ICs monitoring functions, fps, load and tdp at every connector. The processor of the graphic card is not programmed to give boost automatically. One has to change the values of attributes of the clock of the graphic card to achieve the boost. The clock is usually made to run 40% faster. After the clock is upgraded to work more at 40%, you will see a rise in frequency. If this rise is not controlled then it can go up to 800 Mhz.

AMD had once successfully increased the frequency up to 1 Ghz and achieved the stability. But due to high power consumption, they had to drop the project.

Re: How useful is GPU boost when load is low?

One major drawback of graphic card boosting is that when it encounters a scene which has large number polys scattered in many groups, it increases the requirement for framebuffers. This causes the creation of bottlenecks. In many such cases, boosting process doesn’t seem to work as heavy process on shaders cancels the effects of graphic card boosting.

Re: How useful is GPU boost when load is low?

Base clock of a graphic card will work at the lowest frequency clock possible. While boosting the lowest value of power that should be used is 1050 MHz. It is preferable if you use a default power supply and not any upgraded power source. Depending on your graphic card, it can be boosted by using 50 MHz more power but it will never require less power than 1050 MHz. Some high quality of graphic cards is known to be boosted with 52 MHz of more power than the suggested value. The variation in requirement of power supply for boosting is usually seen in Nvidia graphic cards.
