Windows 7 cannot set Monitor to 120hz with GTX 295

Few days ago I have purchased Samsung 23" LED Syncmaster S23A750D. i would like to set the resolution at 1920 x 1080i and refresh rate at 120HZ. I have been trying to customize these values but it Windows 7 unable to set it at all. MY Graphics card is XFX GTX 295 and I have installed the latest drivers 260.10. The weird thing is that if the set the resolution to 1920x1080i at 120hz in Windows XP Professional, it just work excellent. But no matter what I do, it doesn’t work in Windows 7. The maximum values achievable are 80HZ @ 1920x1080i. Can anyone get me a good solution for this?

First of all I want to know whether you are using the Dual Link DVI cable or a HDMI cable.

• How did you connect your graphics card to the monitor?
• If you have used the HDMI port and cable, then tell me what version is it?

As far as I know that HDMI 1.4 doesn't support 120hz at 1080p. it doesn’t matter even if your TV support it. If you own a HDMI 1.4, then you can get up to 720p or under at 120hz though. So my suggestion is to run the Monitor at 1080p @ 60Hz instead of 720p @ 120Hz. It also looks better

Somewhere I have read that HDTVs do not accept 120Hz input; they only support 60Hz. 120Hz and 240Hz for HDTVs is a some kind of video processing for those monitors which will occur internally by HDTVs. What it makes is, it will covert the video playback for smooth and quality in order to add or improve more life to the image. Some people say that it will make the images or videos look artificial. However if you are looking forward to get 3D HDTVs, then they are not truly 120Hz. The limit is still less than 60Hz.

I think that you are still using the outdated drivers. So now I would recommend you to install the updated quadro drivers 266.45 which contain a modified inf file for your Graphics card. It may fix if there is any compatibility issues. I know hat this card is still under the category of fast cards but you need better drivers.

If you have got the GTX 295 GPU, then you must be looking for a 120 Hz monitor. If not right now, soon you will want it. I assume that you can still get a 5-2 ms monitor refresh rate. Many people want to get Samsung 22'' 120 Hz for that reason of 3D-view, with a $30 off with NVIDIA 3D glasses combo. But I didn’t see any monitor which has 120 Hz on 24'' range models.

Currently I am using a 2ms 120Hz panel and I compared it directly with the 7ms IPS panel which is in my office. There I have noticed that 120Hz panel feels quite better and smoother with 2x the frames but if you look through the actual ghosting I don’t think that there is any kind of difference in both panels. However I can barely say that 120Hz display is purely better and smooth playback due to its increased frame-rate but IPS display doesn’t make any difference on ghosting. This the only thing that makes the 120Hz TN panel better than IPS but on other things IPS wins.

I assume that there is some kind of confusion with people. If your TV does support the Auto Motion Plus 120Hz Refresh Rate, then it doesn’t indicate that TV can show videos at 120 Hz vertical refresh rate. The TV still accept video signals with only a 60 Hz vertical refresh rate. As fa ras I know that the Auto Motion Plus 120Hz Refresh Rate is new technology which is used to get rid of motion blur during the video playback. It works like post-processing of an image on the TV's own circuitry. It calculates an interpolated image and then does insertion, creation and a non-repetitive transition for each frame one after another.

First of all you have to make sure that the new monitor has been recognized by windows 7. I think that the monitor has installed as a generic TFT and due to his Windows 7 does not able to set the refresh rate to 120Hz. Otherwise it also possible that Windows 7 is avoiding it to save the monitor from damage. However if you want to get the HDCP content on your monitor, then you can try the Single-Link-Mode at 60Hz. For that you will need a Dual Link DVI Cable
