If you wanted to select from those two cards then i would suggest you that you go for the AMD Radeon HD 7950, it is nice but costly as compare with 5850, so you can get it for you.

If you are going for the Radeon HD 7950, then let me tell you that it is slower at stock, but slightly faster when it is been overclocked and also consume very less power to run. If you are trying for crossfire then you will not able to run Skyrim on it. With all these things it makes the 7950 much better card and which it proves also. There is huge difference in the cards, where 7950 is 450$ and 5850 is 120$. I am having the 5850 done the crossfire on it and it is been the best for BF3, very much happy with it. So you think about it.

The price thing which is been seen by the people before going for 7950. The price of the 7950 is been very high and it is been at top place, if you are thinking to upgrading older card to crossfire then it not best thing to do it and also it is not worth to have it.

If you are making the ATI Radeon HD 5850 to crossfire then the performance of it will be much better then 7950 or 7970. Where the other card are much higher in cost. Where both of the card can be overclocked. If you check than you will find that the 7950 will be more power efficient and also it will not save the upfront cost difference before it becomes obsolete. So you think about it and also you might be able to get to work it out.

If you are trying to work 5850 for crossfire then you will be able to come across many problem like the heat, airflow, case size, etc. So where the 7950 will noit be having it, both of the card differ in cost but not get the problem in 7950.

If i have to go for it then i would go for 7950. If you consider about the resale value and also future upgrade ability then 5850 will be not best choice and you should go for 7950.

If you have setup both of them then you will get the same performance from both of the cards, whereas i am knowing that the 7950 is not having any sort of the problem with the running a crossfire setup on it. It might be micro stutter or the game will not been supporting the game. I would suggest that you go for 7950, and also sell the current 5850. But it will be costing you very much if you go with the 7950 or buying another 5850, but you wanted to have a better setup then you have to spend some cash. I am waiting for the Saphire 7950 and just wanted to get back to stock, i am very much sure that i will be getting this card and also i do not care that it is costing more for it.

There are some of the new cards which Nvidia was thinking to releasing, so i would suggest that you better stick with one 5850 and get the new nvidia card when it will be released, so you take this as your third option.

I feel that the 7950 is very much faster the 5970, which is fast with 2 card of 5850 in crossfire. The advantage will be of 100w will be less in power consumption, and also it will not heat so much, will not make noise and also it will not stutter, price is been only disadvantage, other than that it is advantage.

If you are able to afforad the 7950 then you should go for it, even you can wait for 1.5gb 7950 card, when it will be available in the market.
