Can I use Geforce 4 MX440 with Dell OptiPlex GX240

I am having one old Optiplex GX240 SFF and I am trying to make is of that for light web browsing. I have taken a low profile Dell Nvidia Geforce 4 MX440 64MB as of the eBay. This card is having the DVI out and attached to the VGA monitor with the help of the DVI to VGA adapter. Settings for this is stuck at the 640x480 through the 4-bit color. When I tried with the one more old Optiplex SFF(a GX270) then that was working just great without any problem then what is the problem with the Geforce 4 MX440. If somebody of you can provide me any solution for this then I will really appreciate that. Thank you.

This is seemed to be problem with the outdated or corrupted driver and this is the reason that you are facing issues like this. So what you can do is, just update all the drivers to the latest version available on internet and then try to use that. I don’t think that this time you will get the issues like this if it is related to the driver.

If nothing works for you to get the issue solved then you can make use of the Sparkle GeForce 8400GS 256 MB DDR3 PCI with Native HDMI Graphics Card and you will be out of issue. I am also using the same and that is not showing me any problem like this. So this will be the best that you can try for this.

You must first verify that you are at least having Windows XP Service Pack 2 in your computer and if not then you get such issues. If you are having the Windows XP SP 2 installed in your computer then install the forceware 56.72 WHQL drivers once you are completed with the installation of the Directx patch. I would like to tell you that there are no Windows 7 drivers intended for these GPUs. If you wish to make use of the Windows 7 then you will require to have the Forceware 95 VISTA drivers.

If the card that you are using is not the AGP card, it is a PCI card then there is possibility that it is incompatible because of just being a 5V card and not the 3.3V otherwise universal card.

After reading your post, I think that the card which you are using is a bad card and so it is not working properly and showing you the issues like this. My suggestion to you is to take at least Geforce 5200 version of the card. I am having the same card and it is not showing me any problem with it and so I am also recommending you the same. Good Luck!!!

You should not get any problem with that card. I am also using the same and that is not making any problem for me and so I hope that it will do the same for you as well.
