Which to between AMD and Nvidia for better graphics

I am planing to switch for an gpu support. My friend is selling of its old Nvidia gpu and before buying that I would like to go for more research. I found that AMD is also provides much high end gpus in that range. I want to buy a card from the best one. According to you which one will provide me a better support and solution. The other things which also important to consider is that for how long does this card will support the latest games.

There are ample of competition between the both companies. The battle between them was between the Radeon HD 6990 and GTX 590 graphic cards. I go with AMD in my views due to the wide range gpu support and as am also one of the regular user of this. The AMD Radeon HD 6790 is one of better cards produced by AMD. Also one thing which matters when you go for an better video editing is HD Video Encoding. You must check that your gpus should have better codec support. If they are not capable of reading the same then there is no worth to buy. Today there are ample of cards which has better output support for multimedia also.
