Can I use single GPU for gaming at 2560 X 1600 resolution

I am planning to build a rig on my own as I want to play games like Crysis, BFBC2at medium and high settings at around 2560 X 1600 resolutions. But then I got to know that I can’t go for two GPU’s at same time. So now my ideal set up that I consider is the CPU is the core i5 2500K/ i7 2600K.And the GPU is the Super clocked GTX 570.So my question is that can I use a single GPU for gaming at 2560 X 1600 resolution. Will it work properly or do I need one more GPU.

I had a look at your problem and I feel that if it is an single card you want, then the GTX 580 is the best you can buy. That is the best one you can go for any you will enjoy playing games with it and there is no second question about it. The second best are the GTX 570 and HD 6970 although the HD 6970 does have a more inconsistent performance then the GTX 570. And if the price isn't too different then you should choose based on the games you play and see which has better performance there.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I think that going with single GTX 580 would be a safer option .But now I have read somewhere that the GTX 580 at stock speed is the fastest single GPU solution as of now. So it seems very good but the problem with it is that of the power consumption and heat. These are the drawbacks of GTX 580.Other wise it would be the first option. And talking about the games I prefer games like Crysis, Metro, BFBC2, COD which are mostly mission based games with heavy Graphic.

According to me the 6970 performs better for those games which you usually play at 2560*1600.So it’s up to you to either go for 6970 or 580 and for this you can even check out the prices to see which one would be a good buy. Even I went from a 5970 to 6970 and I’ll tell you that it’s been a very good upgrade. I can easily tell you the difference between them now. So whichever way it is I guess you should now tossup between those two options and get the upgrade done immediately.

Thank you for your replies. They have helped me a lot. I think that I should go for the GTX 580 and that would be very useful for me. I have even checked the reviews of it and most of they are good. And most important among that is it’s very good for the games which I play. So it seems that it’s a very good choice to buy. I would once again like to thank you for your solutions and suggestions as they helped me a lot and cleared my mind completely.

    1. Really? **** mate! I spent $1000 on my HD 5970 in 2009. It still kicks the living daylights out of any game I whip its way... Even with vSync @ Max Resolutions and **** it, maximum everything all of the time and nothing ever faulters.

    2. Please do tell the difference! The HD 5970 was manufactured in limited quantities due to the specially selected parts and components that remain far superior to pretty much any GPU on the market (minus perhaps the 6990). And now, you're ready to toss this out to basically downgrade to a 6970?

I just want to add that: You are aware of the fact that the 5970 has UNBELIEVABLE overclocking potential when coupled with the right components? Without tweaking voltages, I got mine up to 880Mhz. Now, with the appropriate voltages tweaks, she's hitting 1Ghz. There's no reaching that with any other GPU in its class and modern 6990s may have the answer to it.

    Hi shorinman,

I also agree that performance wise HD 5970 outbeats the Radeon HD 6970 but the HD 5970 consumes more power than the HD 6970. But as for public opinion they can either go with the 6970 since it's a single gpu card and give you close performance to it but 5970 will give more performance since it has 2 gpu's on one.
