Will ATI Radeon HD 5970 2GB be enough for 4800x900 resolution

Sponsored Links
I'm about to move into a 3-monitor setup Eyefinity (3 = 1600x900 4800x900) and was going to buy a 2GB 5970. I have only one PCI-E slot and it will be in one case and ATX motherboard (it has space for the card though). I wondered if I could keep the framerate playable (50-60 FPS mostly) with the three monitors in these games (on high settings):
  • Battlefield Bad Company 2
  • Call of Duty: Black Operations
  • World of Warcraft
I make PC games more demanding games (Crysis, Metro 2033, GTA4, etc), but I'm okay to stay with a single monitor to 1600x900 to keep the high (er) configuration.

Why not wait until the 6970 comes literally in two weeks? Yet if you still wish to pick up a 5970 prices fall overnight. 5970 will be give a run for their money with any of the problems of a multi-GPU configuration. But if you're really serious about multi-monitor performance, enough to consider a 5970, then out in January 6990 will be well worth the wait, too. That the card must be powerful enough to play those games with that resolution. Battlefield cannot run at 60 fps, but I'm pretty sure they play. As the guy above said, I would wait until after the release of the cards before making a decision unless you need it now.

Re: Will ATI Radeon HD 5970 2GB be enough for 4800x900 resolution

Though I will be sitting at the back for Q9550 @ 4GHz and will most likely carry on to stay with it until LGA 2011 (I love my Q9550), then I do not want to buy a brand spanking new card for many $ $ $ to be a neck bottle for my CPU. I know that the 5970 would still be a bottleneck, but it would be much less and taking into account that I have seen some of these sell for ~ $ 380 then I think it would be a good pickup. I guess the 6970 would be the release of about $ 350 - $ 400 fine, but I'm doubting that is capable of surpassing the 5970 (at least according the roadmap for performance of AMD chips) and the 6990 will overcome, but I'm guessing it will not cost less than $ 600 - $ 700.

I simply wanted to ensure that the set would Eyefinity 4800x900 satisfactory show in 5970. As of what I've seen the 5970 generally perform extra satisfactorily to 2560x1200, so I presume that as the resolution is 4800x900 so close in terms of pixels processed then you must be fine. I really appreciate the fact that there was any personal input and that helped me confirm my beliefs. I will make a full review when the socket LGA 2011 (Q4 2011 last I heard) comes out and hopefully by then the 7xxx HD or GTX 6xx series or any name that will take place or is or will be out soon after.

You are definitely well established that processor until the next generation safe. However, I think 6970, in fact, be at least as fast as the 5970. How I can make that assumption? Based on the performance of the 580 that is within 5% ... assuming Xfire scales correctly, that not always the case. But the 6970 will almost certainly at the stage of a 580 at a cost slightly less. It is also likely to want the 2 GB of video RAM that comes in a 6970 instead of having access to only 1 GB per GPU in 5970. I think it'll be a better card for the intentions of the multi.

Re: Will ATI Radeon HD 5970 2GB be enough for 4800x900 resolution

I ended up biting the Sapphire 5870 1GB for $ 215 (after MIR) from Newegg. It also turned out to be three small LCD with 1440x900 resolution each, since the LCD was 20 "not fit well on my desktop. So the joint resolution would be 4320x900 which is less than the resolution of 2560x1600. I looked at some points 5870 reference and the 1 GB can play most of my three games (BF: BC 2, COD: BO and WoW) without any problems at 2560x1600 to a lower resolution like 4320x900 should be cake for it. For the most intense games (Crysis, "Metro 2033", etc) that I will play on a 1440x900 LCD screen that the 5870 1GB should be able to destroy any problem. I'll probably end up getting a 6970 after falling in price like the 5870 is, I'm in no hurry to get special.

Re: Will ATI Radeon HD 5970 2GB be enough for 4800x900 resolution

Yes, except for the 2GB version of 6870 is not released yet (and the 6870 is a bit weaker than 5870) and a 2GB 5870 costs almost double what they just paid for my 5870 1GB ... The 1GB 5870 is capable of playing the Bad Company 2 in DX11 at 2560x1600 (which is better than 4320x900 resolution) at the maximum settings with 4xAA and 16xAF about 40 FPS. So I guess once you overclock mine, bring it down to play at 4320x900 2xAA and should reach about 45 to 50 FPS which is more than enough to make me happy. As the 5870 Black Ops is supposed to be able to play at 2560x1600, highest settings, 4xAA and 16xAF in more than 60 FPS. 5870 WoW and can play at 2560x1600, max settings, 4xAA and reach 75 to 80 FPS. More than a great power. As for the rest of the games. 5870 is too much for playing at 1440x900. I'll pick up a 2GB 6970, after falling below $ 250 this card did, even if it means waiting a year.
