    Benchmarks for Radeon HD 6800

Anno 1404 is the latest scion of the Anno series, which has a big task ahead: to beat the three highly successful predecessor. Technically, this one seems to be able to meet easily, as well Anno 1404 to date without a doubt, the best strategy games visually - and with perhaps far. This is the title even offers a Direct3D 10 support, which has still rare in strategy games. The eye does this definitely like to note, since Anno 1404 offers not only a beautiful water view, but also more consistently knows how to please. A real graphical flaw is not in the game.

The main modes of antialiasing are on the Radeon HD 6000-series remained absolutely identical to the settings of the Radeon HD 5000 generation. Unfortunately SSAA does so remains below the DirectX 9 API. Ceased to exist is on the old series, the Tent-filter, a result of only moderate results at first glance easy to get over loss. The first shock is educated rapidly: Although AMD specified that MLAA works on all common APIs, is at present the only DirectX 9 of the case. In DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 gaming MLAA has no consequence. AMD has now inveterate this to us and explains that this is a mistake.

In DirectX 9 MLAA works perfectly and happily in all (!) Games. This means that MLAA can be used not only in securities that officially supports anti-aliasing or where the Catalyst drivers can force Anti-aliasing, but also with graphics engines that normally have nothing to do with anti-aliasing on the hat, such as GTA 4 or Risen - very practical. In addition, MLAA be combined with MSAA or SSAA. But how MLAA look like in practice? Since this is a post-processing effect, it is not so easy to create screen shots of the anti-aliasing. With a little trick it goes but then: you have to use just start in windowed mode because it can be absorbed by simply pressing the "Print button" to the MLAA effect (here the recorded actually on the monitor output image ). In some applications, the trick works in full screen mode, but by far not in all.

The situation is different however in Mass Effect 2 off. There has MLAA against 4xMSAA the advantage that it works on the whole image including the vegetation. This, however, the entire picture content is very blurred. Normal MSAA smooths the vegetation is not, but there are no annoying blur effect. A total loss suffered by MLAA in Crysis Warhead. The blur effect (Blur) is again very pronounced and also appears to have MLAA difficulties to grasp the polygon edges. For there is in the results as good as no smoothing, making the image more or less like activate anti-aliasing looks - just a blur. So that we can "recommend" MLAA only if neither per application, even by drivers MSAA or SSAA possible.

In games like GTA 4 and Risen MLAA can certainly obtain an improvement of the optics. If the usual anti-aliasing works, however, should remain MLAA consistently off. A combination of MLAA with MSAA or SSAA then produces a better result. The new feature MLAA explained that in the end, the elimination of edge detection, because both processes are characterized, a similar result on the monitor. According to AMD Morphological anti-aliasing be much more efficient than super-sampling AA and have similar good performance as Edge detection on the Radeon HD 5000 series. All four test candidates demonstrate that MLAA significantly reduces the power and AMD's statements are a bit too optimistic perhaps. Sun MLAA cuts in Call of Duty 2, the FPS values by 35 percent, while only 25 percent 24xEDAA costs - the equivalent 4xMSAA 14 percent. Even 2-fold super-sampling anti-aliasing is not as power-hungry.
