Hi I have an Acer Aspire AM1641-U1521A Pentium dual-core pc I am trying to upgrade. Can I use a XFX Raedeon 5550 1gb video card in a Nvidia chipset pc or is it preferable to use a Nvidia 1gb GT220 card?
Thank you for any help you can offer.

It is better to use the Nvidia 1gb GT220 card which will give you better performance then Readon as this can show little incompatibility with the nVidia Chipset. No doubt that the Readon are having the better quality then the nVidia but when its comes to compatibility then it is better to use the Nvidia 1gb GT220 card.
thank u Cailyn and I have one other question for you. I am attempting my first pc build using a ASUS P6T X58 motherboard. The confusion is they say it is SLI and Crossfire compatible. Which option should I go with? if I go ATI I was thinking of using Raedeon 5770 GPU and if SLI nVidia GTX 460 GPU. Do you have a better recommendation of GPU at a reasonable cost. I am designing a setup to watch a lot of HD Bu Ray and 3-d movies as I don't really play games. Thanks for any help the forum can give me. Finally if I have to upgrade later is SLI an easier upgrade since I can add an additional GTX 460 and add 6gb of ram in the three vacant memory slots?
MOBO - ASUS P6TSE x58
RAM - Corsair 2gb X 3 DDR3 SDRAM
CPU - i7 Intel 950 3.06ghz (LGA1366 socket)
PSU - LSP 650 Watt
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm
Monitor - Acer GD235HZ or ASUS VG236H (both are 3D ready)
I would like to recommend you to go for SLI nVidia GTX 460. I had observed a good fps output on this graphic card. The additional thing about this card is the better cost. The GeForce GTX 460 is without a qualm is one of my favorite mid-range graphics card right now. Even though if you stick two of them together they become mine preferred high-end combination, particularly in terms of price. In the dozen games that we tested the GeForce GTX 460 SLI graphics cards were on average 16% quicker than the GeForce GTX 480. This is a immense deal not just because the GeForce GTX 480 is the highest single GPU graphics card you can acquire, but for the reason that you will likely end up paying less for the GTX 460 duo. There are extra improvements eroding the GeForce GTX 460 SLI configuration over a sole GeForce GTX 480. While the SLI cards use 5% more power below full load, they also devour 37% less power at inactive, a critical figure. It's appalling enough that system consumption can reach over 400 watts when gaming, but to have them never jump down below 200 watts can get a modest preposterous, particularly for those that keep their system on 24/7.
Thanks Gefry I did a bit of reading and found out that my ASUS P6T SE X58 MOBO is crossfire only so that eliminates the gtx 460. Can you recommend a comparable Raedeon GPU? I am now considering the Raedeon 5870 1gb need something with 3D capability using the pc specs I listed above running windows 7 64bit OS.
It is completely dependent on the requirement of your. If you are not looking for the more gaming experience then you have to go with the ATI Radeon HD 5770 which is compatible and well tested with the ASUS P6T SE X58. Another one which you can go through is ATI Radeon HD5670 . So select it accordingly and find it working with the same.
I have decided to go with the ASUS 6850/6870 GPU since I am using an ASUS mobo. Question is will I experience any problems using this, what appears to be an AMD GPU with an intel CPU? And is the selected PSU an acceptable power supply or do I need a higher wattage one? Do you have a recommendation?
Thanks
MOBO - ASUS P6T SE x58 LGA1366
RAM - Corsair 2gb X 3 DDR3 SDRAM 1333
CPU - i7 Intel 950 3.06ghz (LGA1366)
PSU - LSP 650 Watt
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm
Monitor - Acer GD235HZ or ASUS VG236H (both are 3D ready)
Samsung P2770HD HDTV
For the power requirements, the HD 6870 will need two 6-pin connectors to give its maximum performance when it gets on the PCI Express port, while the HD 6850 will sate its needs with just the one. So, yes - a Ultra LSP650 650-Watt Power Supply would be enough for the graphics card that you are choosing. You can also use Asus Power Supply Calculator to check whether your config is sufficient enough to handle it.
