GTX 480 on Ubuntu 9.04 probe failed

    Hello friends,

I just got a GTX 480 which is running in the operating environment (Ubuntu 9.04 with gcc 4.3) but is unable to detect it.

In the dmesg that I am getting :

NVRM: The NVIDIA GPU 05:00.0 (PCI ID: 10de:06c0) installed
NVRM: in this system is not supported by the 195.36.15 NVIDIA Linux
    NVRM: grphics driver release.

    Any Suggestions ?

    Zag..

I think, you should go for this to use 195.36.24 :

    • Added support for the following GPUs:
      1- GeForce GTX 480
      2- GeForce GTX 470
      3- Tesla C2050
    • Fixed a problem that caused occasional red flashes in XVideo frames.
    • Added official support for xserver 1.8. The -ignoreABI option is no longer required with this version of the server.
    • Updated the "Supported NVIDIA GPU Products" list to include various supported GPUs that were missing previously.

I am not really sure that why the early drivers are managed using that method for Linux but that looks to be the place to get them...

GTX 480 on Ubuntu 9.04 probe failed

I am very thankful to you and specially for your quick reply, I am still in stuck and running with the same error message:

NVRM: The NVIDIA GPU 05:00.0 (PCI ID 10de:06c0) installed
NVRM: in this system is not supported by the 195.36.24 NVIDIA Linux
    NVRM: graphics driver release.
    ...
NVRM: the NVIDIA probe routine failed for 1 device(s).
NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 195.36.24

If I only running with the GTX 480 then my P6T7 board signals no VGA recognized (one long beep continued by 3 quick ones). I can read the error if a GT 9500 drives the monitor. I don't think I have some related issue of power supply since I am running with 1.5kW PSU. My default system is 2 card GTX 280 and a GT 9500 for the monitor. I would like to substitute the GTX280s for GTX480. Any more ideas ???

I am also running with the P6T7 WS revolution board, and my 2x GTX480 is going well with the drivers 195.36.15. But It is not 100% working, in that nvidia-settings does not properly detects the clocks on the card (it suggest it's 0 MHz) but CUDA examples run without any issues, and my code going as well. However, the older drivers from December did NOT functioning ... cards getting detected but the GTX480 would not run CUDA examples. (2D graphics assumes fine). The older generation of drivers (193.x?) did not detect the GTX480 entirely. I have not tried today's latest 195.36.35.

According to me, This is the first and primary solution for such issues.Just try to reinstalled the driver (even though it was installed before) and also clean the xorg.conf file away properly.I think the driver re-installation can be helpful for you first. you need to try this first. though your 195.36.24 install would have performed the same as. Did you perform the installation that while the GTX480 put on the machine?

I am not sure that in WINDOWS it is really necessary to install the drivers with the cards usually in the computer. It does not like you situating new cards later. It can work but it can also get failed. It will claim it's reinstalling drivers itself and then ask you for committing restart, but that self re-installation doesn't seems to perform the same as when you start to install the driver yourself. That may be why I assume the driver reinstall in Ubuntu helped me also.

Re: GTX 480 on Ubuntu 9.04 probe failed

So, I purchased this Card idk, about 8 months before. It's been a well card according to my requirements, and I am very happy to have it. But before two days ago, It is not recognized by the monitor.

When I connected in the VGA connection to the card the screen just switched into sleep mode, just as like it is not getting a signal. But when it is in the regular on board VGA it performs very well. DVI connection does the same thing, monitor moves into sleep mode. The Fan placed on the card still pops up,So I am aware to know that it is not the PCI-E slot. Anyone know about this ? what's going on here?

    Please Any advice is welcomed
