GeForce 8400GS to 1080p LCD TV

I have bought a mythtv box which uses a component out to an analog CRT with VDPAU, But there is something wrong with this TV i think may be he soldering problem. I am now going to buy a new LCD of 1080p. I just want to know that what would be the best way to connect MythTV box to the new TV with the 256M 8400GS card? I want maximum resolution that i can have on this new TV where VDPAU also works. DVI output is also provided which is not used yet and there is a VGA connector as well on card.

I was at the same position where you are now but i was having the 512mb 8400 card. I have bought a new Toshiba 55SV670u and i have used DVI to hdmi converter with this video card. Though i have compromised the change which have came in my TV but still i able to see live TV and it is just working fine with the DVI to hdmi converter. I suggest you to do the same with your TV and video card as DVI to hdmi converter works without any problems.

I think you should use the HDMI -> HDMI cable instead of DVI to HDMI converter. Because in this time nobody uses the DVI for home theater. And even the wiring is concealed in a wall so i thought to use HDMI to HDMI which has not much difference in its price. And i would like to tell you that it perfectly works with the VDPAU for the resolution up to 1080i to 1080p. I do not use Blue Ray DVD's on this so it does not matters much to me.

I have seen bit major problem while using the DVI->HDMI but i guess there is some problem with the EDID the TV supplies. Actually i am having the problem with the sound as it seems that the TV is searching for a sound support from the HDMI cable. I think it is overriding the real analog input on the specified "DVI Audio In" jacks.

I have 8600 card with which i am using DVI - HDMI connector and i should work if the video card has an SPDIF pass-trough connector. Anyways as i have found a solution to get the sound using the DVI - HDMI if there is any problem regarding the sound.
    • Use nvidia-settings to save the edid.
    • download edid_disable_exts.
    • edid_disable_exts original.edid new.edid
    • This chops off any extension blocks and recalculates the checksum.
    • mv new.edid /etc/X11/tvname.edid
    • edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf as in lostdog's example, to read the edid
    • restart the X11 server (ctrl-alt-backspace)
