Problems in gameplay with Windows 7 and Radeon X1650

I have Windows 7 installed on my Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. I also have Ati Radeon X1650 graphic card installed on this laptop. I am trying to play CS 1.6 but facing a lot of problem in it. I always get a fluctuation in fps during the gameplay. I first thought of driver issues but when I tried to install the latest drivers from the internet but still it doesn't solves my problem. So I was just wondering if anyone had any success in playing CS on Windows 7 with Ati Radeon X1650 graphic card?

This is a common problem with the users of Windows 7 since they don't find a compatible driver for their hardware. The only solution that comes to my mind is that try to use Windows Vista drivers on Windows 7 computers. Simply because both of them are almost same and so should work in your situation. And also in many cases I have seen Windows Vista drivers to be working on Windows 7. So there shouldn't be a risk in doing the same in your case.

Even I had the similar problem once. But I had solved the matter by installing the latest Catalyst driver from the AMD website. For your information, the latest Catalyst version is 10.3b; so go for it. If you still find any such problems then do come back. One more thing I would like to tell you is that this version of Catalyst is also available for Windows 7.

Did you checked your card on amd site? Because I think Radeon X1650 is one of the graphics card in the "unsupported" list for Windows 7. So the only solution that is left with you is to use it in Vista compatibility mode.

For Catalyst 10.3b, it is not applicable for Radeon X1650. It is just for HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition. So this driver will not resolve any of the problems of GavinT.

I had a similar problem as you. I tried a number of solutions as suggested over the internet. I even tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers a number of time. But none of them worked. Finally someone suggested me to install Catalyst 8.12 which is applicable for Windows 7 users. I did that and at last everything is working as I expected. I hope this would be helpful for you too.
