    Highlights of ATI XGP technology

    Hi,
For laptops it is really quiet costly to upgrade to a high end graphic card support. And sometime there is not hardware for the same. But there is one more thing which supports is XGP technology which offers you a external box for graphic display. Does this also supports external monitors. I am quiet a bit confused with the working of this box with other laptops.

While the technology is not new, AMD has taken advantage of the latest ESC to restart the technology that allows laptops to use a graphics card PCI-Express externally through a port external PCI Express 2.0 and owner jointly developed with the company Global JAE Electronics, Inc.. This port owner is unfortunately not standard and therefore uncommon on laptops.

ATI XGP is an External Graphics Platform, the technology is characterized as an external box that will carry a Radeon Mobility HD 5000, output dual-link DVI, one HDMI and DisplayPort outputs three and 2 USB 2.0 ports. The unit is powered by an external power supply in addition (about 35 watts). The ATI XGP TM therefore bear the technology Eyefinity and can manage up to four monitors. What push the limits of any laptop and offer new graphics capabilities, including play.

The Amilo GraphicBooster is an example an technolgy which only works with an external display that does not appear in this illustration. This box connects to a selection of laptops Amilo range (only the Amilo Sa 3650 by Puma for the moment) using a proprietary connector equivalent to a PCI Express 2.0 8x 4 Gb / s . It can not be used with all models and even less with the computers of other brands. It has video outputs DVI-I (with HDCP) and HDMI (with HDCP and audio pass through SPDIF format), and only two USB ports.

ATI XGP simply means giving your laptop a external graphic support. Although it achieves performance honorable but it does however with an external display connected to one of two video outputs, the internal display does not benefit from the power of the external graphics card, this which severely limits its scope and its use confined to a fixed use. It furthermore requires an external power supply.

Re: Highlights of ATI XGP technology

Considering the different models there where the user who wants to use the ATI XGP hardware unit with them or have a considerable amount of very large display high quality already included in their laptop, ATI will be supporting ATI Cross Display XGP technology systems. This allows the ATI XGP unit to directly drive the laptop display (plus one external display connected to the laptop if desired), enabling the high performance graphics output on laptop right without the need of an external monitor connected to it.
