IS PCI express x1 card possible in x16 slot

As per my knowledge, in past we were able to install an ISA card into an EISA slot. Similarly i wanted to know that will a PCI-E x1 card work properly in any larger PCI-E slot, x4, x8, x16 without hindering performance of the GPU's? I think PCI Express compatibility might be a good idea to leave room for future upgrades.Will the PCIEx16 slot support a PCIEx1 card ?

Yeah, PCI express x1 card work properly in x16 slot. But the condition is that the device should not be larger than the slot size because PCIe 1x connector is so much smaller then the PCI connector and only supports a bandwidth up to 5Gbps, while the 16x PCIe slot supports 80Gbps.You are supposed to be able to stick x1 in x1, x4, x8 and x16.

A PCI express slot is designated by the increased number of supports: 1x slot supports a single lane, X2 support double or 2 lane, etc. Similarly a x16 slot can support upto 4 Gbps bandwidth of AGP 8X deal but throwing out your PCI card. Now a days any computer and most motherboards come equipped with a single x1 slot, one x16 slot for graphics card, and some original grooves PCI. So i don't think PCI express x1 card will work in x16 slot.

The connected number of lanes to the slot may be less than the number supported by the physical slot size. If you look, the 1x slot is entirely different, it wont fit period. You may have seen that a x8 slot that actually only runs at x1; these quarries will have any x1, x2, x4 or x8 card to allow use, though only running at x1 speed.You can add some additional lanes by repeating the data lines the appropriate number of times to the increased width of the slot to support.
