unsure Which PSU to go for Palit HD 4850 Special Sonic?

    Hi Friends

I am purchasing Palit Radeon HD 4850 Special Sonic Edition (512 MB GDDR5) locally (Tirupathi Enterprises). Compared to the Stock or Sonic 4850 this Special Sonic Edition has two 6 pin power connectors(Like HD 4870). I don't know which PSU has 2 PCI-E 6 Pin connectors besides the regular connectors(I wanted to go for Corsair 450VX but it has only one PCI-E 6 Pin Connector).

Could somebody guide me on purchasing a PSU which offers better amp in 12V rail with more efficiency/connector/watt options under 5k?

    Thanks in advance

I have done some looking around and will give you some buying advice based on what i have found and what i know.

Palit and indeed Sonic make more than one version of these and indeed most of the different cards they produce. Usually the first cards released will be very similar as ATI/Nvidia don't let the overclocked cards out until a few weeks after the first launch.

I personally recommend you go with a ATI radeon 4850. They perform nearly the same but i favour the extra features of the ATI card like the HD decoding and support for DX10.1.

Things to look out for are. A dual slot cooler(this means it will need two cards worth of space to fit) so you will use two slot spaces to fit it in the case. like this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148280 It pushes the hot air out the back of the case through the grille on the top of the card which is better for your system and these coolers are better at cooling the card as well.

Other things to look for are the amount of RAM 512 is plenty but if you can get one with 1GB for similar money then its worth it.

Clock speed should be about 625 for a standard card and Palit do a sonic version which is clocked at 685. This is the core or engine clock and is the main processor speed. so any thing above this will be good.

Memory speed is about 2000 for a standard card and again anything with a higher number is better. This is the DDR (Double Data Rate) figure and some times you will see a number about half of this which is the actual memory rate. The DDR speed is the one that matters as this is the actual speed the card will run at.
The Ramdac will be 400, I hope this helps and i am sorry i cant see the actual cards which would have made it a lot more simple.
Any more questions please feel free to ask.

    Hi Adham

Thanks a lot for the informative reply

And if i have to believe the specifications given by my local Palit distributor (cochin), this special sonic edition HD 4850 card is more like an under clocked HD 4870 with non reference features and GDDR5 Memory over the stock's GDDR3 memory.

The price difference between the stock and this special sonic edition is under 1000 bucks(Indian rupees).

I don't have any official links for this card, the following is what i could find about Special Sonic Edition

Do you know any PSU which has two 6 Pin PCI-E Connectors(i don't want to use separate 6 pin adapter or converter in PSU)?

    Looking forward to your advice/suggestion

    Thanks in advance

Re: Which PSU to go for Palit HD 4850 Special Sonic?

    Hi Cyberenigmatik,

Looks like Price of GTX 260 Core 216 has come down

    EVGA-Rs 13250
    Palit-Rs 12500
    Zotec-Rs 11500

I guess @ Rs 11500 GTX 260 is better buy than HD 4850

So me purchasing HD 4850 is almost nil now

But the PSU thing i figured out, i will go for Corsair 550VX('cos it has got two 6 Pin PCI-E power connectors)

(All the values i mentioned were of Indian rupees)

Re: Which PSU to go for Palit HD 4850 Special Sonic?

    hi mebaali

nice choice of the PSU its one of the best in its wattage category..

also gtx 260 is a good choice at that price..
it has more ram than 4850 sonic special
so you would be able to enjoy higher resolutions

but for the performance part i m still leaning towards 4850 sonic special
as it has gddr5 memory..it has double the memory bandwidth than gddr3
    ie. 1 gddr5 = 2 gddr3 = 4 gddr2

checkout the links to anandtech review of the cards

i will surely do some more research on this as well before i buy..

plz let me know which one you bought and at what price

also if you can give me some performance stats that would be great
cos i need to run the games at native resolution of my display at 1920x1080

    i would really appreciate it

    thanks in advance

    AMD Athlon X2 6000+
    ASUS M3N78-EM MOBO
    2 GB ZION RAM
    BENQ E2200HD DISPLAY(1920X1080)
    TAGAN TG500 U37 PSU
