AMD delivers ATI Stream SDK v1.4

AMD Eases Development of ATI GPU-Based Applications with ATI Stream SDK v1.4

Improvements to Brook+, Finer Grained Data Handling, DirectX Interoperability and Access to Thread-Level Data Sharing Provides Developers Superior GPU Programming Tools

AMD releases ATI Stream Software Development Kit (SDK) v1.4, the fourth installment of the free toolkit with significant enhancements for developers. ATI Stream technology is a combination of hardware and software that leverages the immense capabilities of AMD graphics processing units (GPUs) to accelerate compute-intensive applications. The goal for the ATI Stream SDK is to provide an open, industry-standard toolkit that enables broad application adoption of ATI Stream technology.

WHAT: This software release serves as an upgrade to ATI Stream SDK v1.3 and includes significant improvements.

    • Feature enhancements to Brook+:
    • Support for multiple GPUs in a single program
    • Support for 8-bit and 16-bit integer types
    • Interoperability with DirectX API
    • Access to thread-level data sharing
    • Improved support for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008
    • Performance enhancement to the Brook+ runtime:
      • Support for memory pinning to optimize data transfers
      • Support for asynchronous stream write calls
    • Additional hardware features exposed in the Compute Abstraction Layer (CAL):
      • Support for texture sampling (bilinear)
      • Support for FETCH4
    • Support for the ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 consumer graphics card
    • Support for the ATI FirePro 3D V8750, V8700, V7770, V7750, V5700 and V3750 professional graphics accelerators

WHY: The release of ATI Stream SDK v1.4 delivers a full-featured software development environment that exposes the amazing computational power of AMD GPUs in an easy to use interface. Developers can now take advantage of enhancements to Brook+ to support multiple GPUs, finely grained data handling, DirectX interoperability and access to thread-level data sharing, empowering the developer community to program advanced applications that leverage ATI Stream-enabled hardware.

WHO BENEFITS: Developers in the commercial HPC, consumer and vertical industries including financial modeling and risk assessment, oil and gas exploration, medical imaging and computer-aided research can benefit from the ATI Stream SDK v1.4. This release provides superior flexibility for developers utilizing AMD hardware, and provides them with the tools necessary to take full advantage of the benefits of general purpose graphics processing.

    About ATI Stream Technology

    GPU Technology for Accelerated Computing

ATI Stream technology is a set of advanced hardware and software technologies that enable AMD graphics processors (GPU), working in concert with the system’s central processor (CPU), to accelerate many applications beyond just graphics. This enables better balanced platforms capable of running demanding computing tasks faster than ever.

Along with leading third party industry partners and academic institutions worldwide, AMD is building a complete ATI Stream computing ecosystem, one that delivers the performance, applications, software and tools necessary to turn AMD's low-cost application acceleration vision into reality.

    Characteristics of GPU acceleration:

    • Enable new applications on new architectures
    • Parallel problems other than graphics that map well on GPU architecture
    • Transition from fixed function to programmable pipelines
    • Various proof points in research and industry under the name GPGPU
