Re: Difference Between Pixel Shader 2.0 and Pixel Shader 3.0

According to ATI, it made no difference at all ... until they announced PS3 support for their latest cards PS3 is a much broader and more comprehensive standard and can do a lot more in a given trimeframe, (or conversely it can do the same as PS2 but in less time). The effect can be subtle but can look better than those imposed by the limits of PS2.

Hello, However, if the shaders are different (but the end result is the same), then, well, it depends on how they're different. For example, a dynamic branch by itself is a slow thing, but if it can save lots of instructions and has somewhat coherent on-screen pixel patterns, then it's most likely a win.

Re: Difference Between Pixel Shader 2.0 and Pixel Shader 3.0

Hello , Pixel Shader 3.0 version allows computers to show graphics that are comparable to XBOX 360. Many people find out that their video card does not support Pixel Shader 3.0 when they try to play some of the latest games on their computer that they thought was fast. When it comes to playing some of the latest games, it requires more than just a fast computer. Your computer has to support several features for certain games to even run. Pixel Shader 3.0 is an important requirement for some of the latest games that have been release for PC. That is because these games were designed to draw the images in a more advanced environment. Trying to make a game backwards compatible with Pixel Shader 2.0 would make the game unplayable on most computers. The amount of processing power needed would be almost doubled.

Re: Difference Between Pixel Shader 2.0 and Pixel Shader 3.0

Pixel Shaders 2.0 (DirectX 9.0)

The following is a fourth list of computer games that require DirectX 9.0 programmable Pixel Shader 2.0 support to run, eg. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. Games such as Far Cry that only need pixel shader 2.0 as an optional feature will NOT be listed here. Users of graphics cards such as GeForce 3 will therefore not be able to run Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, but will run Far Cry without problems.
  • Act of War: High Treason
  • Battlefield 2142
  • Broken Sword 4: The Angel of Death
  • Company of Heroes (demo)

Note: The single-player demo version is missing PS 1.x support, which results in a visible interface, but a blank terrain onscreen.
  • Europa Universalis III
  • The Matrix: Path of Neo
  • Spider-Man: Friend or Foe
  • Stubbs the Zombie
  • Spore[2]
  • Starcraft II
  • Overlord
  • Crysis
  • Condemned: Criminal Origins (needs confirmation)
  • Europa Universalis 3
  • Neverwinter Nights 2
  • Supreme Commander
  • Timeshift
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Note: Oblivion does have a partially complete 1.x shader package, which the mod 'Oldblivion' completes, enabling it to run/walk on a GeForce3. By default, Oblivion doesn't complain of missing shaders when run on GF3/4 Ti, but there will be missing shading on most graphics.
  • Test Drive Unlimited
  • Vanguard: Saga of Heroes
  • Resident Evil 4 (Works perfectly with 3D Analyze)
  • Raiden III
  • Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition
  • Onimusha 3: Demon Siege
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  • Ninja Reflex
  • Requiem: Bloodymare
  • EVE Online: Apocrypha

Pixel Shaders 3.0 (DirectX 9.0c)
The following is a fifth list of computer games that require DirectX 9.0c programmable Pixel Shader & Vertex Shader support to run, eg. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Games such as Far Cry that only need Shader Model 3.0 as an optional feature will NOT be listed here. Users of graphics cards such as Radeon 9700 Pro will therefore not be able to run Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent, but will run Far Cry without problems.
  • 3D Custom Girl
  • Assassin's Creed
  • Bioshock
  • BlackSite: Area 51
  • Beijing Olympics (Video Game)
  • Clive Barker's Jericho
  • Colin McRae: Dirt
  • Conflict: Denied Ops
  • Dawn of War II
  • Dead Space (video game)
  • Devil May Cry 4
  • FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage
  • John Woo Presents: Stranglehold
  • Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
  • Lost Planet
  • Lost - Via Domus
  • Mass Effect
  • Medal of Honor: Airborne
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
  • Race Driver: GRID
  • Spider-Man 3
  • SBK 08
  • Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent
  • Turning Point: Fall of Liberty
