ATI R200 Radeon 9200 with Ubuntu 8.10 works very slow

    hello there

I'm really new here, I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 operating system on two machines, a laptop which consists of NVidia GeForce Go6400 that works excellent, and an older desktop with an ATI Radeon 9200. Although the 9200 works really well with Windows XP operating system including the integrated TV-out, I seem to have problems in Ubuntu operating system.

The card seems to be properly detected and it supports 3D acceleration but it works too slow especially with the glxgears test where it seems to obtain about only 600 fps, and scrolling in Mozilla which is too slow.

Please help me with this problem

Replace card, maybe add an old nvidia GF6 or GF7 - do not buy a new card for an old system as you can not reuse AGP cards anyway.

If you don't have EXA acceleration enabled, turn it on in the conf file. I think that should help even with an older card like the r200.

You should be able to run a GeForce 6600GT/6800 or Radeon X700/800 in AGP 2x.

For the current 9200, for the "radeon" driver, make sure you have EXA anabled in the card's "Device" section:

    Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"

This card and any high speed cards to follow in the industry prove without a doubt that GPU speed is far more important than CPU speed. Why? Because this card stomps even on an old mobo I'm experimenting with - an old amethyst MS-7184 mobo with a single PCIe-1 slot, running with a measley 1.8ghz sempron and just 2gb of RAM. STILL. THIS. CARD. STOMPS. I'm just waiting for it to explode the mobo but all is quite, quite well thusfar. The 260 kills all the "old" games. FEAR - Battlefield 2 - Stalker - Half Life 2 all look and play perfect. Now Crysis starts even with my super slow setup, is good-time playable on the 260 at mid-high resolutions with high settings. I'm getting ready to SLI it with another 260 in a better system, but seeing how nicely it runs with very little help from an uber-craptasticly bad setup is truly impressive. but all and sole the card slowly starts dieing with the card though whatever configurations you have
