    Down Humming Noise from CRT

I'm having a Samsung SyncMaster 793s 17" CRT which is 3 years old.

Sometimes after using it for 2-3 hrs, I'm hearing a humming noise from the monitor. There are no electromagnetic devices nearby and the monitor is connected to the UPS.

What's the reason for this noise ?

    Please help...

What refresh rate are you running it at? Because i know my old 19'' crt, when running at a lower refresh rate, made an annoying noise. Check your grounding. Also, try turning off all other electrical devices on that circuit (TV's, Stereo, Clocks, Phones, etc). You may be getting interference from something. An overloaded capacitor can hum, usually a sign that something is failing.

It sounds like the internal amp(s) or power supply were defective. Why didn't you try another pair of them? By the way, this may sound something hilarious to you, but is your apartment near a TV station transmitter? or FM radio station transmitter?

The noise is coming from the transformer. CRT Monitors have Transformers to boost the current and powerup the Cathode Ray Tube [picture tube]. So using it continuosly heats it up and magnetise the transformer so it causes vibrations [ transformers are made of copper winding to boost to to reduce or u can say to step up and step down voltage]

I'm running it at 75 Hz. It's one of the highest flicker free refresh rate for my monitor.

No stations nearby and no cellphone towers also.

One guy told me that the humming is due to :

    1. Failed power capacitor.

    or

    2. Faulty EHT Coil.

    Is that true ?

May be... I'm not into repairs...! Faulty capacitors can produce noise... as the power consumtion of the transformer is disturbed!

The possible causes for humming noise:
    • No earth grounding
    • Overvoltages
    • Harmonics
    • Wrong power factor
    • Brief power interruptions
