Problem of ATI crossfire Radeon HD 4850 drivers

I have Windows Vista 64-bit and a crossfire ATI Radeon HD 4850.

    Here is my problem:

Yesterday I was installing new drivers catalyst 8.12. I restart and I get blue screen. I withdraw the crossfire bridge from the PC because I already had this problem with 8.11. But without the bridge, the blue screen returns repeatedly. So I decided to uninstall all the drivers and then reinstall the 8.11 beta (which was working very well before installing the 8.12). But restarting an error message saying that no ATI driver was installed on the PC.

So I tried to reinstall several times and even reinstall 8.10 but still the same message. I do not understand a thing as before with the 8.11 beta everything worked perfectly.

I really fed up ATI because I already had problems with previous versions of drivers.

I sympathize but since the 8.9, I have nothing but blue screens (under Vista 64) with my cross of 4850.

I haven't installed 8.12 but more bsod will make me mad. So it seems to me some kind of bugs.

Same problem with Vista 32 bit with a crossfireX 4870. Also tried crossfireX HD 4850GS but still the same.

For those who are unable to upgrade the drivers (BSOD bug only on the CF 4850 with Vista x64), here is the solution:

    (1) Make sure that your 48xx Crossfire system is running normally with a set of cats that works for you.

    (2) Install the CAT 8.11's normally.

    (3) After install, reboot the system immediately into SAFE MODE.

    (4) From SAFE MODE, go to administrative tool / SERVICES and locate the ATI External Event Service. Set this service to disabled. Reboot normally into your standard operational mode.

    (5) After boot from the systray open the PCB. Go to the Crossfire section. You should see Crossfire check box empty even though you've installed the drivers with your Crossfire bridges connected. Check the box and hit "Apply" and be amazed to see that your system does not immediately bsod! Hit "OK" to close the PCB.

    (6) Reboot into your normal operational mode again, go to CCP from the systray and check out your Crossfire settings which should now register checked, indicating that your Crossfire system is operating normally. You are done and problem solved. Since the ATi External event service is now disabled, however, you will have to reboot crossfire between turning on and off, but your bsod's should now be a thing of the past.

    Symptoms:

After installing ATI Catalyst driver release 8.12 for two or more ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics cards in a system with ATI CrossFireX technology, the system restarts and halts on a black screen. The black screen occurs prior to the loading of the desktop for the Windows Vista 64-bit or Windows Vista 32-bit operating systems.

This issue ONLY occurs when two or more ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphic cards are installed in the system with ATI CrossFireX technology. One single ATI Radeon HD 4850 card will not encounter this issue.

    Recommendation:

The following hotfix may help resolve the issue:

Catalyst 8.12 Hotfix for Windows Vista 32-bit Edition
Catalyst 8.12 Hotfix for Windows Vista 64-bit Edition

Hi, This is happening with my HD 4670 in Vista 64, but I don't have two or more cards installed (and no crossfirex). just the one. with the latest drivers installed. Should I still attempt these fixes?

    Thanks

Lets face it, ATI RADEON 4850 is a dog that will prevent viewing the screen,
Do not get an ATI RADEON card dudes.

Upgrade to ATI Catalystâ„¢ 9.5 Display Driver for Windows Vista (64 bit)

I am happy to say that after upgrading the driver to ATI 9.5 driver, just released [ from the provided 9.3 driver] the glitches seem to have gone.

I may have installed the wrong card for my purpose which is film making, as I have three or four monitors running off this card.
I am running an i7 2.66Hz CPU, with an AsusP6T motherboard.
If running multiple monitors you have to turn off the cross fire application, which locks out all but one monitor.

It is incredible to me that a computer built three months ago with I think the ATI 9.3 driver was just chaos.
The visual on the screens would collapse if the computer was left inactive for ten minutes or so, and even now this card is reluctant to recognise all four montors even under 'force detection' mode.

I will be careful not to get a gaming card again, and go for a specialist film making multiple monitor card, if that exists.
Thanks to contributors above who have helped turn my computer life from misery to functional again.
