Can't open a project 2007 file I created

Created a project schedule about a week ago under project 2007. have opened it with minor edits over the past couple of days without issue. Today tried to open the file and receive the following message:

Project cannot recognize this format

I can open other project files except this one...Any thoughts as to what happened or how to recover? Unfortunately I do not have a PDF or printout and would hate to lose this work

No backup? Tut, tut! You could try opening a new blank file and inserting
the project into it. If you can open it, then you could try the suggestions
in FAQ Item: 43. Handling project file corruption and/or bloat. Otherwise,
you're probably out of luck :(

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address:

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :-)

Re: Can't open a project 2007 file I created

In conjunction with what Mike said, it might be beneficial for you to
tell us more about your file's structure (e.g. master file, links to
other files, links on summary lines, etc.) and what "minor edits" you
were doing. It certainly sounds like your file when AWOL (i.e. corrupt)
and maybe we can help pinpoint why that happened.

Project files don't normally just up and decide to go bad.

Tried the suggestions to no avail...

Here is a bit more detail on the file I can not open:
Just a task list of approximately 300 tasks, not networked yet, no dates either...just a straight list of tasks (which will be difficult to remember...shame on me)

I did notice something however when I "mouse over" and different project file (in a directory folder). The following data is displayed: Type, Author, Title, Date Modified, Size. However when i mouse over the file I can not open only Type, Date Modified, and Size are displayed...

With Project I guarantee there will be dates even though you "only"
entered task descriptions.

Did you (or someone else) by chance save the Project 2007 file in an
earlier version (e.g. as a Project 2003 format) between the time you
were last able to open it and now? Based on what you have told us, that
is the only possibility I can think of that could potentially render the
file unusable. Or perhaps there was some type of network or power glitch
while the file was open the last time.

Just to cover bases, if you do not have the SP1 update installed for
Project 2007, I suggest you download and install it. Also, and I
probably don't need to remind you now, but save and save often when
working on a file.

Re: Can't open a project 2007 file I created

I have a similar situation but saved after every 5 tasks. After one of these saves (it took 30+ seconds) the file was 1.6 GB+ and then Project had an error and ended. Now the file will not open (too many lines, too large). Is there a way to edit the file outside of Project (2007, saved as 2000-2003) to reduce the size?

Try a new project and then Insert your troublesome project. If you can, try
the suggestions in FAQ Item: 43. Handling project file corruption and/or
bloat. FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be
seen at this web address

If not, then you'll have to go to your backup.

Re: Can't open a project 2007 file I created

I also can't open a MSP 2007 file I created.

Using MSP 2000 at work I can't open the file I created on my laptop using MSP 2007 even though I saved it as 2000-2003 format. There doesn't seem to be a save as '98 version, how would you suggest I open this file?
