| missing or corrupt \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
I have a MacBook Pro which has a partitioned hard drive and is running Mac OS on one side, and Windows XP Professional on the other side. When I try to boot up into XP, I get the following message windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM Attempt to repair using WINDOWS SETUP on the original SETUP CD-ROM select r to start repair I tried this and got the following error BAD_POOL_CALLER ***STOP: 0x000000C2 (0x00000043, 0xC2632000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) I tried using last known good configuration, safe mode and all the other options that are listed. NOTHING WORKS. I am at the end of my rope. Does anyone have any suggestions? Since I can't access the hard drive at all, I can't even re-format it and re-install the software. I can see the hard drive on the desktop of my MAC OS, and can access it from there, but I don't know how to reformat it from there. Any suggestions? |

These links are useless to me as I cannot get into the recovery console to do them. I need to know how I can reformat the partition that has XP on it so I can start with a clean slate and NOT mess up the partition with the MAC OS "Doug Knox - [MS-MVP]" wrote: > http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q307545 > How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry that Prevents Windows XP from > Starting > > -- > Doug Knox, MS-MVP Windows Media Center\Windows Powered Smart > Display\Security > Win 95/98/Me/XP Tweaks and Fixes > http://www.dougknox.com > -------------------------------- > Per user Group Policy Restrictions for XP Home and XP Pro > http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_securityconsole.htm > -------------------------------- > Please reply only to the newsgroup so all may benefit. > Unsolicited e-mail is not answered. > > "cheryl_cam" <cherylcam@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:67A2863A-3F29-4EB6-B396-EB1561524B36@microsoft.com... > >I have a MacBook Pro which has a partitioned hard drive and is running Mac > >OS > > on one side, and Windows XP Professional on the other side. > > > > When I try to boot up into XP, I get the following message > > > > windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: > > \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM > > Attempt to repair using WINDOWS SETUP on the original SETUP CD-ROM > > select r to start repair > > > > I tried this and got the following error > > > > BAD_POOL_CALLER > > ***STOP: 0x000000C2 (0x00000043, 0xC2632000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) > > > > I tried using last known good configuration, safe mode and all the other > > options that are listed. Barb, can you be more specific on how to do this? Sorry, I'm not too technical. Would bootcamp be located on the MAC side or the XP side? it is on the Mac side. who installed XP on your MacBook Pro? I'm assuming this was done using bootcamp. I don't know the specific steps to format the partition once you boot into the Mac OS. Perhaps a Mac forum would be the best place to look for help on doing this. http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ On Sun, 6 Jul 2008 13:18:00 -0700, cheryl_cam <cherylcam@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: >Barb, can you be more specific on how to do this? | Re: missing or corrupt \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
I was going to look at Bootcamp to get info to help here, only to find out that it has expired. To be explicit: I have OS X 10.4, and the beta version of Bootcamp there has expired. According to the Apple website, to run the release version I have to upgrade to OS X 10.5 (which is not about to happen here just yet). If Cheryl_cam is in my situation, she won't be able to run Bootcamp :-( There is a problem beyond this. If she is at 10.4 and she tries to install Windows from the CD (where she could also format the partition), at some point she would need the Bootcamp drivers and they'd have evaporated - but IIRC you can't even boot from the CD without Bootcamp (even to do a repair installation). About all the above: years ago a friend of mine used to say "That's enough to piss off the Good Humor Man". Yeah... BTW, I'm happy to run my Windows in a virtual machine. I've used Parallels and VMware. They're pretty much equal, perhaps. There are problems with some I/O in both (but not the same problems). Barb and Gene, Thank you for all of your suggestions and help. I went to the Apple support page and got the instructions for undoing the partition, and Gene, you're right about Bootcamp being expired. I guess it's time to call my little brother for help as he's the one who convinced me to buy this stupid laptop. He's totally MAC and I've always been PC. Thank you to all for trying to help, but now it's time to defer to my brother. If I ever get this fixed, I'll be sure to post here what was done so some other poor person doesn't get as frustrated as I have. Cheryl "Gene E. Like Barb, I'm sorry it's a mess. I do like running the VM - and both Parallels and VMware have mechanisms to create a VM from a real machine (over an ethernet cable, typically) or from the Bootcamp partition. Unfortunately, your Bootcamp is broken - but maybe your original machine (the PC you migrated from) is up to date enough to seed the VM (virtual machine). Or you could install Windows in a VM from scratch and go through all the tedium... Here's a quick story (not quite short enough, sorry!) to show that Mac isn't all bad: I ran the latest Windows update today (luckily I was smart enough to make a Parallels snapshot first). When all six updates were installed, I had no way to get to the Internet - somehow ZoneAlarm was now broken. I returned to the snapshot & installed the least suspicious updates. No problem. Installed the remaining ones one at a time and found the offending one. I went back to the snapshot & installed the good ones. In addition, the Windows update process is a *very* clumsy process compared to Mac, which made the above process take hours, and also made me swear a lot :-) But Windows does give more fine-grained control... Disclosure: I've been a Windows user since almost before there was Windows (really: since 1.0) and only in the spring of 2007 did I cross over to the dark side :-) On 7/07/2008, cheryl_cam posted this: > Barb and Gene, > Thank you for all of your suggestions and help. > I went to the Apple support page and got the instructions for undoing the > partition, and Gene, you're right about Bootcamp being expired. > I guess it's time to call my little brother for help as he's the one who > convinced me to buy this stupid laptop. I found the fix, and I didn't even have to call my brother. Thank God, or he'd never let me hear the end of this. You need to go into Mac and change the date to a date earlier than Sept 30, 2007. This is when Boot Camp Beta expired. Make sure to uncheck the box to set the date and time automatically. You can then "Restore startup disk to a single volume" and start from scratch. After re-partitioning and re-installing Windows XP, make sure you change the date/time back. Hope this helps anyone else who runs into this problem. Cheryl "Gene E. Bloch" wrote: > Like Barb, I'm sorry it's a mess. > > I do like running the VM - and both Parallels and VMware have > mechanisms to create a VM from a real machine (over an ethernet cable, > typically) or from the Bootcamp partition. Thanks - now I don't have to call *my* brother! But that all works out OK anyway, because to tell the truth my brother doesn't know as much I do. :-) Actually, I only wanted to go to Bootcamp so I could recall enough to advise you about your need, since I don't run Bootcamp lately. I was still annoyed at what Apple did, of course... On 7/13/2008, cheryl_cam posted this: > I found the fix, and I didn't even have to call my brother.
