Windows Media Center Does Not Detect ATSC Clear Qam Cable Channels

I have a VisionTek 650 PCI HD Tuner Card. The software that comes with it is
the ATI Catalyst Media Center and works fine. I would like to use Windows
Media Center, but the setup procedure in Vista Home Premiums Media Center
never detects the digital side from a cable connection. I have even tried to
enter some channel manually, but it still won't work. I have also found
several posts relating to a Hot Fix from Microsoft. This Hot Fix fails to
solve the problem. I am doomed to only using the Catalyst or some other
third party software? Will Microsoft fix this issue in the next service pack
or sooner?

Vista does not support QAM, at this time. The only way to get the
unencrypted channels from a cable source would be to purchase a Digital
Cable Ready PC with one or more Digital Cable Tuners. And you cannot just go
out and buy a Digital Cable Tuner. While Sony does sell them on their site,
your PC must be certified as Digital Cable Ready in order for it to work.

Re: Windows Media Center Does Not Detect ATSC Clear Qam Cable Chan

Doug:

This is a Windows Vista Home Premium PC by Gateway. I already get clear qam
cable with this tuner on this PC. It works perfectly fine with the VisionTek
650 PCI tuner that I am using as long as I use the ATI Catalyst Media Center
software that comes with the tuner. So wouldn't you say that Vista can and
does support clear qam? At least as long as you are using the software
inlcuded with the tuner. ATI states right on the box that it only receives
clear qam only on Windows Vista.

The problem apparently is that Windows Media Center in Windows Vista just
needs to be updated to work just like the ATI Catalyst Media Center.

Re: Windows Media Center Does Not Detect ATSC Clear Qam Cable Chan

There is a major update for Vista MC scheduled for later this year and
hopefully support for QAM will be in it for other then cable card tuners,
however, there has not been any commitment by MS for this feature.
The statement from the ATI box says nothing about QAM support in MC in Vista
and really means that only their own application supports it as you have
found.

Re: Windows Media Center Does Not Detect ATSC Clear Qam Cable Chan

You stated yourself, your using ATI's software, not Vista, if the ATI
software wasn't installed, no Qam because Vista doesn't support it, it
requires 3rd party software to work.
