WMP Media Sharing Problem

I recently installed WMP 11 to use the DLNA Media Server along with my PS3. I
installed and the media player works. I followed the instructions found
online for allowing media sharing and hit a snag. I click on "Library" then
"Media sharing..." and when I check the box that says "Share my media" and
click OK the computer thinks and then nothing happens. I don't get the list
of devices to choose from that apparently I should. Help!

RE: WMP Media Sharing Problem

I have exactly the same problem, I click "Share my media" and "Ok" and
nothing happens, it hangs for about 10 seconds and then the "Ok" button
becomes selectable again. I had it working fine with WMP 9 and my PS3,
everything was smooth regardless of it being 9. The only reason I upgraded
was because I was tired of the annoying notices Microsoft likes to shove in
my face so I said okay fine! And upgraded. Everything works better in older
versions, don't fix what isn't broken Microsoft!

RE: WMP Media Sharing Problem

I found the fix, here goes:

"The media sharing service depends on several other services, including
uPnP services and SSL. In turn, they have specific firewall
requirements which you may need to check inthe WMP help files against
windows firewall, zone alarm, Norton or whatever.

The service triggers ZA for me each time I start WMP, which is
annoying. I may turn off that notification when I've checked the
requirements for the service.

If you go to Control Panel, select classic view, then Administrative
Tools and finally, Services you should be able to get a list of
currently running system services.

What you *should* have running are :

Windows media player network sharing services
SSDP Discovery Service
Universal Plug & Play device host
HTTP SSL service

For each of those, double click the entry and ensure the service is
listed to start Automatically, and that it's running (press Start if
it isn't at the time you set it to Automatic).

Unfortunately with *so many* dependencies, there's a significant
chance that people may configure their PC this way or that and end up
disabling the functionality, so I'm rather hoping the error message
will be improved to indicate exactly what's not working, rather than
"some thing or other is broken" ;-))

Cheers - Neil "

RE: WMP Media Sharing Problem

That fix did bring up the "share my media to" but there are no icons
underneath. It's not finding the PS3 and I believe I have everything enebled
on the PS3. Any other advice?

RE: WMP Media Sharing Problem

Unfortunately that is as far as I got as well, it brings up the share to box,
but my PS3 is not listed. I actually think it had something to do with the
recent 1.92 update Sony released. If anything else happens I will let you
know.

RE: WMP Media Sharing Problem

Thanks Chris, I'll do the same. So you said it did work with older versions.
Would you suggest that I uninstall 11 and upload 9. I really want to see the
PS3 do what it's capable of.

RE: WMP Media Sharing Problem

Thanks for making the effort, Chris and Nuge69. I just tried the services
route. Two were on manual, but changing to auto, and they were running did
not help. I still cannot find the other computer on the home net. Will roll
back to 10.

I tried to enable the services like you suggested and my WMP 11 is not
seeing my 360 through the router and when I go to click on Settings in the
Media Settings box, it gives me an error and tells me it is going to shut
down. Every time. Funny thing is that I've had the thing working just fine
last week. I didn't change anything on my PC as far as I know. *sigh* And I
liked the idea of being able to stream my stuff to my 360...The dream...Is it
dead? Any other suggestions?

PS3 to get backup and soon to loose teh connection again.

Re: WMP Media Sharing Problem

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked and could not find the "HTTP SSL
service". However, the others are set and running as specified.

Windows media player network sharing services - running and automatic
SSDP Discovery Service - running and automatic
Universal Plug & Play device host - running and automatic
HTTP SSL service - did not find

RE: WMP Media Sharing Problem

All I can say is that this post saved my life and my sanity. I had spent two
days trying to get connected to my Xbox 360 after a windows repair and was
ready to do a full reinstall.
This post also resolves

1. Xbox 360 connectivity problems with WMP11 and Zune
2. Zune problem of logging in each time you start Zune

I will also post this one on Zune as the guidance on that web site is just
plain wrong!

Thanks
Alex
