| Playing DVDs help and MPG-3: wats the best codec?
Hey everyone, im having problems with playing movies on my laptop with wmp11. My movies playing very slowly and upside down. If anyone can sugest a codec just by that discription please let me know. Most of the movies are mpg-3's and i thort i already have a codec for mpg-3's; can anyone sugest a reali good one? Also movies ive bought from the shops wont play on my laptop because this mesage keeps coming up... "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because it is not possible to turn on analog copy protection on the output display. Try installing an updated driver for your video card." Does anyone know what this means? Ive tried playing the same movies through another program and it tells me that its copy right protected and is unable to play. My CD rom is a burner as well so i can understand why i wont burn but not why it wont play. Thanks for your time -- Rhiannon Bandiera |

Hi Rhiannon, You have a lot of information here that doesn't apply to DVDs. DVD movies use MPEG2 decoders for their video, and an AC3 decoder for audio. The error you're getting means that your system needs updated video drivers. To get this information I need you to follow the instructions below: I need to know what version of Windows (XP? Vista?) you're running, also I need you to click "Start -> Run, type in DXDIAG and press enter. Wait until the little green bar in the lower left corner disappears (answer no about the WHQL drivers if asked). Once you've done that, click the Display tab. On that tab you'll find information about your video display card and the driver version. Please post here the information that I've listed out below: Name: Manufacturer: Chip Type: Main Driver: Version: Date: This information will help us get you the right updated video drivers. -- Thanks! | RE: Playing DVDs help: computer information
Sorry it took me a while to get back to you but i have the information about my video card and drivers for my XP - you said u could help me find the best one to help me watch dvd's on my computer. The main driver is a vga.dll, version 5.01.2600.0000 with the date 8.4.2004. However at the moment the name, manufact and chip type are unavailble on the device side. Does this mean i am missing hardware? -- Rhiannon Bandiera -- Rhiannon Bandiera "Mike Poz [MSFT]" wrote: > Hi Rhiannon, > > You have a lot of information here that doesn't apply to DVDs. Rhiannon, Sorry for the late response, I was away on vacation. Unfortunately it looks like you're using the generic drivers. This means you need to dig deeper into the system to get the information I need. Click Start -> Run, type in DEVMGMT.MSC and press enter. This will open the Device Manager. In there find "Display Adapters" and if it's got a plus (+) to the left of it, click the plus. This will expand the tree to show your display adapter. Double-click the actual device entry and a Properties dialog will appear. Click the Details button. There will be two boxes, one with a small downward pointing arrow at the right end. Click that and select "Hardware Ids". In the box below you'll see a number of strings, all starting with "PCI\VEN" and followed by numbers, letters, ampersands, etc. It will look something like this: PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4966&SUBSYS_00021002&REV_01 Click on the top one and press Cntl-C on your keyboard to copy this string into the system clipboard. Then reply back to this message with that number. You can press Cntl-V on the keyboard to paste it into your reply. Once I have this I can figure out what your display adapter is and point you at the right drivers. -- Thanks! | RE: Playing DVDs help: computer information
Hey Mike, Sorry it has taken me a while to get back! I went into device manager and i do not have a tag saying display adapters. The only tabs i have with the mention of adapters are 'network adapters' and 'PCMCIA adapters'. I did however find this under Universal serial bus controllers PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27CC&SUBSYS_01D61028&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&EF and several tabs labeled 'PCI standard...' under my system devices tab - all of them different. ....host CPU bridge PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27CC&SUBSYS_01D61028&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&EF ....ISA bridge PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27B9&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&F8 ....PCI - PCI bridge PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27B9&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&F8 There are two different types but Im not sure which one you need or whether these are completely relevant or not, other wise im not really sure where else to look. Hope this is helpful -- Rhiannon Bandiera "Mike Poz [MSFT]" wrote: > Rhiannon, > > Sorry for the late response, I was away on vacation. > > Unfortunately it looks like you're using the generic drivers.
