Media Center Edition Tuner Not Available

I get the Tuner Not Available error in analog only the Media Center.

The tuner is there and works in Beyond TV. The drivers are the latest. It
is the VBox 164 E dual analog/HD tuner. I just plopped down for the premium
Nvidia decoder. Uninstalled the demo and installed the purchased one.

errors are indicated in ehRecvr.log

Does anyone have any ideas.

Re: Media Center Edition Tuner Not Available

Do you have a software encoder installed for the analog tuner that will work
in MCE? At it's best the use of the analog tuner is a unsupported hack for
MCE as analog tuners without hardware encoders are not supported and worse
hybrid tuners are also not supported except for digital tuning. If I were to
use the card and relied on it for recording I would not consider using the
analog and digital function of a hybrid tuner as conflicts and missed
recording are sure to happen.

If you must hack the analog tuner for use in MCE rather then use the card as
a dual ATSC tuner, maybe this link will help.

Re: Media Center Edition Tuner Not Available

Dear Jolt,

I have a premium quality software encoder NVidia Pure Video Platinum. The
demo version of the NVidia worked briefly once. Next I uninstalled it and
tried a different version NVidia encoder, which did not work in analog. I
tried uninstalling and reinstalling the NVidia demo and it failed. I
recently purchased the Premium NVidia decoder, thinking that the demo decoder
may be blocked from working. I uninstalled the demo decoder and installed
the Platinum.

The VBox Cat's Eye 164E is also a premium product with a Gold rated driver.

Just to clarify, it is a dual combination analog/HDTV tuner. In essence it
has two analog tuners and two HDTV tuners. It has separate drivers that make
it look like two tuners.

Re: Media Center Edition Tuner Not Available

According to the info from VBox, the card Microsoft Gold certified and
designed specifically for the Media Center Edition.

http://www.vboxcomm.com/vbox/Cats%20...ltr_%20v09.pdf

I think the problem is related to the interface between the decoder and the
Media Center.

The system worked once with the Hauppauge 500 MCE and the NVidia Demo Decoder.

Afterward I had continuous Loss of Signal Error.

I have the same issue (Loss of Signal Error) with the installed FusionHDTV5
RT Gold, also a hybrid analog/HDTV tuner.

I think because I have installed and uninstalled decoders so many times,
something went wrong and information is misdirected.

Re: Media Center Edition Tuner Not Available

Yes,but the certification only applies to the digital tuners not to the
analog tuners as JW pointed out.
This is because the card and its drivers do not support the BDA interface
which provides encoded video to MC like the digital tuners do since the
signal they recieve is already encoded.

Re: Media Center Edition Tuner Not Available

Dear Jolt and JW and anyone else who can help,

VBox supplies the MainConcept MPEG2 (demo) encoder. I have downloaded the
latest version of the MainConcept (demo) encoder and the tech at VBox seems
to think this should. work. The tech at VBox has had the experience of the
Cat's Eye 164e working in analog, with the software encoder installed.

I understand now about the part that these hybrid tuners do not have a chip
onboard to convert the analog stream into digital. How can I make the
MainConcept Encoder the preferred.

I do have an ATI encoder, according the MC XP Diag Tool 2.5, but this is not
Media Center compatible--is called Video encoder, not MPEG2 decoder. How do
I disable or change the priority of this encoder?

Just to state the obvious, when I go to analog the ehShell service drops to
zero % cpu usage. Then in selecting an HDTV channel it goes to 20-80% cpu
usage.

The error in ehRecvr:
[2007/04/28 20:49:39.734] CDigitalRecorder(0)::GetVideoEncoder: Can't get
IVideoEncoder from Service Provider. hr = 80004005
means the video data is not being processed by the ehShell.

If it is trying to use an encoder that is not MCE compatible. That would
make sense.

Also, how can I clear my registry from the references to the tuner2 of the
Hauppauge 500 MCE dual analog tuner. With the Hauppauge, I got consistently
got the Loss of Signal error in analog. I returned the Hauppage.

I currently get the Loss of Signal error in analog with the DVICO FusionHDTV
hybrid. This tuner also lacks a hardware MPEG2 encoder. It has the
UnifiedAVStream driver that comprises the MPEG2 encoder, presumably.

Also, what about the KramMCE drivers detailed at:
http://www.hdtvtunerinfo.com/tvencodersexplained.html
Will this work for me?

Re: Media Center Edition Tuner Not Available

You can't make it work with MC since MC requires that it receive already
encoded video from the tuner/video capture card drivers, MC itself does not
have or use andysoftware encoders

Re: Media Center Edition Tuner Not Available

I disagree with you, JW.

I have a Kworld ATSC 110 Analog and Digital tuner Card, it does not have a
hardware encoder.
I did get it to work in MCE 2005 with a software Encoder.
It is not recommended, but it does work on my system.

There is a list of Software Encoders that work with MCE 2005.
I am using the Arcsoft MCE software Encoder (32 bit) (First one in the list)

Re: Media Center Edition Tuner Not Available

I guess I did not word it correctly by saying the MC would only accept
encoded video from the card/drivers and had not encoder software of its own
or that it used. I did not mean to imply that a vendor can not supply a
software encoder which then creates BDA drivers for the analog tuner since I
am aware of several such products and of course they work since MC has now
idea where the encoding is being done since it only talks to the BDA
drivers.

Re: Media Center Edition Tuner Not Available

Very Good.
It is too bad that MCE did not include encoders in the original code.

Re: Media Center Edition Tuner Not Available

The problem is the large amoung to CPU power that software encoders consume
and this was a big problem in the early days of MCE with lower powered CPUs.
MS would still accept them for the designed for MCE logo program with MCE
2004, However, with MCE2005 and the ability to have multiple tuners they
stopped all approvals of any product using software encoders.

See

http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...11/479928.aspx
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...17/534559.aspx

or many of Aaron Stebner's other blogs.

He is "the man" ! Very responsive also!

I have a DVICO DVB-T that went missing, and between the two referenced
blogs (Aaron pointed me to the one about the services after checking
my MCE logs when the first only partially fixed it) it is working
again. If there is a problem with your analog tuner, Aaron will know.

Try the remedy in both blogs in order, and see how you go. Aaron's
email contact is there also.

Re: Media Center Edition Tuner Not Available

I will try to apply the advice of CSM1.

Over the weekend I added a second MPEG2 encoder (not needed, acc. CSM1).
The ATI Media Center Encoder in addition to the MainConcept Media Center
Encoder.
I fooled around with the filter tool DSF to change the merit of the Encoders
http://www.hdtvtunerinfo.com/tvencodersexplained.html
I got the VBox tuner to change states from Tuner not Available to the Loss
of Signal Error and to generate intermittent audio. The tools for tweaking
described by DSM1 as the site seem promising.

I assume that I need to make sure to install only one

1-MCE encoder (remove 1 MPEG encoder)
2- properly select the preferred audio and video MPEG2 encoder and a
decoder (graphedit tools)that will work with it. I have the (Platinum NVidia
PureVideo.)
3- then run my system.

When I checked the merit of the MainConcept over the weekend, it was set to
0x002000 (do not use). Increasing it to 0x08000 (preferred) did not help, as
expected. I do not have the ehRecvr log, but the ehRecvr service was
consuming a lot of cpu %, while I was getting intermittent sound.

Also, I just uninstalled Media Player 11, reinstalled Media Center Rollup,
then reinstalled the Media Player 11, which installs a Microsoft version of
the MPEG2 decoder, presumably.

Let me know if there are other suggestions.

Re: Media Center Edition Tuner Not Available

Hello Everyone,

I was able to get analog TV last night on one of the hybrid tuners
(FusionHDTV). The keys to the solution are:
1) only one MPEG2 encoder can be installed at once;
2) remove one MPEG2 encoder completely before trying another;
3) confirm your tuner hardware has necessary pins (graphedit tools);
4) make sure the filter merit is set properly to allow the system to choose
the encoder of choice (DSFMgr).

I removed both the MainConcept and the KRAM (ATIMCEE) encoders and the ATI
MCE Plug in. Then I reinstalled the KRAM using the advice of Russ at
http://www.hdtvtunerinfo.com/tvencodersexplained.html steps 1-5.
There are the graphedit tools and some great advice at
http://www.tv-cards.com/messageboard....php?pid=53076
Now I have the DSFMgr app and the GraphEdit Tools on my desktop, each which
have a role in the solution above.
