Microphone (or jack) stopped working (2 seperate times)

What I'm using: HP p6331 Desktop, 2 different Logitec headsets.

The problem: I can hear through headphones but Mic won't work. When I log into Ventrilo I get this error

"Unable to activate DirectSound for selected device.
DirectSoundCaptureCreate failed. HR=DSERR_NODRIVER. No sound driver is available for use".

I started by restarting my computer, unplugging and plugging my mic back in, which didn't work. I have since re-downloaded drivers as well and I'm still not getting anything.

When I go into the mic settings for the computer the green bar doesn't respond when I speak into the mic. I have checked and nothing is muted or set to 0.

Any help with this would be great. Thanks.

Can you try to do the following steps as shown below to correct your issue:

    1. First of all, go to Control Panel > Sound > Recording tab
    2. Click once on the Mic icon.
    3. Ensure that the sound card in the computer is the default device
    4. Next, click on PROPERTIES > Levels tab.. adjust level..
    5. Now try to use the mic and see if that works out.

Thanks for the reply. I tried those things and am still not getting any response from the mic. I did notice however that the "reception" bar for the mic is half green like it's getting sound from something, but it doesn't change at all if I try to use the mic.

Can you go in ventrilo setup and from their try to uncheck 'use directsound' then set the name to the mic device? Did you try creating a recording then playing it back? I too had this similar issue and As soon as I plugged in the Mic from my headset the error stopped popping up. As soon as I unplugged the Mic and reconnected the error popped up again. Simple validation.

Just tried that and then tried a recording and I was able to hear the push to talk sound but only got static back when speaking. I guess it's possibly my mic is broken.
