    Are these files suspicious? Needs to be removed?

    I am concerned with few unknown files on my C Drive. Hope you guys can help. Yesterday when I was checking my C Drive on XP Media Center and found these files:

    1.) with .SQM extensions - (hidden)
    2.) IPH.PH - (hidden)
    3.) .rnd (RND file) file - (visible)
    4.) install.dat - (visible)
    5.) delnis.bat - (visible)

    I’m not able to recognize these files. Hope these are not any viruses or Trojans? Any info please?

    Nope, none of them are viruses. Infact three of them are related to windows. Here is the complete details:

    • SQM Extn:-Windows Live Messenger Log File
    • IPH.PH Extn:-AOL Phone Home Data File
    • RND Extn:-AutoCAD Autoshade Rendering Slide
    • Install.dat Extn:-Can be text, graphic, or general binary data etc.
    • Delnis.bat Extn:-DOS batch file.

    You can get more info about these extensions on Google itself.

    Al right, thanks a lot for the help friend. But have a question here. I don’t have AutoCad installed then where from RND extn came from? Meanwhile I just tried opening install.bat and it opened in notepad with the following text. Can you please check is it is ok:

    [install]
    wt=1
    extdata=ppc^__uo^^_pga`iqhte
    dl=-1
    stat=1
    expdate=12/30/1899
    expdate2=12/30/1899
    act=0
    regcksm=0
