| Windows Explorer has Stopped Working
I have just purchased Vista Ulimate (1/31/7) at Sam's Club. The install went very well. The overall experience is great, with the exception of copying files. When I try to copy a file, I get "Windows Explorer has Stopped Working" followed by "Windows Explorer is restarting. So, I am unable to move/copy files. If I cannot find a solution quickly, I will be forced to roll back to XP. |

I get this to. I canot take a file on my desktop, do a cut of it, open another explorer window and do a paste to c:\temp...what gives? Hey all...hope you can help. I tried installing Norton Antivirus on my machine with Windows Vista Home Premiere today, and the install didn't work...but now my computer is stuck in a constant loop of Windows Explorer crashing and restarting...over and over again. What do I do? Thanks very much!!! Well, I did some more digging and found a utility called shellexview which allows you to see all the explorer add ins and easily disable them. So I disabled all non MS ones and things worked great. I then slowly started turning them on and repeating my steps and found that Tortoise SVN was the cause of the problem. I went to their site and sure enough, there was a fix for this very issue. Things have been working great now, other than other application specific compatibility issues which I expected, but so far so good. Hopefully someone will have the answer. We just bought a new laptop last week with Vista and we are getting the same error: Windows Explorer has stopped working!!! It seems to be stuck in a loop!!!!!!!!!!!! Which means we can't do anything else.....help |

| Re: Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working
Hey Thanks, Rock. One thing, though. I do not have a Windows Vista DVD. I downloaded it when I purchased it from Microsoft. Not to mention, I can't get the control panel to stay open long enough to choose System Restore. Windows Explorer closes it when it restarts itself. Any ideas? Thanks. |

That's why I gave you the way to access from the DVD, but that's not going to work. Ok, try this, reboot, tap F8 to get the Advanced Boot Options menu, boot into safe mode, and run system restore from there. Or if you know anyone that has the DVD borrow one to run System Restore from the repair options. Um, no... XP drivers are still quite comm for most peripherals and aren't going anywhere... I doubt it would be difficult at all to redo a a Vista pre-installed comp with XP Pro. In fact many people who are building new systems are using XP Pro SP2 and having success, I wonder why that is :) "Just received new desktop PC from Dell. Came with Vista Home Premium installed. worked well for three days, Now When I log in I immediatly get message "windows explorer has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution for the problem"". Then, "Windows explorer is restarting....."" It cycles between these messages from that point on. I would ask Dell first, since this is a brand new system. This could be caused by a third party application that was installed by Dell and could be a known issue that they are already aware of. If they can't help, you might want to use System Restore to go back to a time before the problem started. |

The first step is the safe mode and ty to find whether it works there or not. The second step is to do a clean boot (to go to clean boot type in msconfig at the sratup search)with selective start up and in selective start up uncheck load startup item & load system services. On the services tab click on hide all microsoft services and disable all the other items over there. And then go to start up tab and disable all the start up items and restart the computer. If it works well then do a divide and conquer with the start up and the services items. Once found uninstall the software from the p.c. Whenever I try to access anything controlled by windows explorer (ie documents, computer, downloads, control panel) The window shows up blank, and qeues the new vista spinwheel, then gives me the Windows Explorer has stopped working message, which then gives way to the windows explorer is restarting message. I can use everything else like applications and internet, but I can't even open windows update or any folder for that matter.... Any advice/help would be appreciated. I had a similar problem in a fresh install of Vista Ultimate- everytime I tried to do anything in the GUI (Explorer), I got an error, "Windows Explorer has stopped working"... looking for solutions, "Windows Explorer is restarting..." It seemed that there was no end in sight. Check the event viewer to see what is causing the error. Open the Task Manager (CNTRL ALT DEL, start Task Manager), then from the Task Manager program, select File-Run from the menu. Type MSCONFIG. You may have to try these steps several times as the crashing Explorer will probably get in the way. In my case, Explorer crashes mostly did not affect secondary apps (i.e. Task Manager and Msconfig). In Msconfig, select the Tools tab and select Event Viewer and click Launch. In Event Viewer, open up Applications to see what errors you are getting. If "C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\***.db" is causing the problem, you need to delete the *.db file in that directory. But because Explorer is crashing, you obviously can't do this from a window. Go back to Task Manager and type, "runas /user:[username that has administrative rights] cmd" You will be asked for you password. Enter it. Now browse to the directory with the *.db files that are causing problems and delete them. They are temporary thumbnail caches. One or more are are probably corrupt. As soon as you delete these files, Vista should run just fine. |

I am having this same problem ("Internet Explorer has stopped working") and I followed the directions in the response below, but did not find any error messages to address. Now what? And is this going to keep happening? What is heartily amusing in a painfully ironic way is that the same computer that has this problem is now showing a message from Microsoft asking me to confirm the e-mail address with which I signed into this website - but I can't because it won't let me get to the website because Internet Explorer has stopped working. You are not alone but we are all alone in finding a remedy to this problem...a temp solution is back up the directory you are viewing, delete it and copy it back...however, it seems to be spreading...once I fix one, another one pops up...it is frustrating and I do NOT want to reload Vista!!!! Every 5 secs. Pop up Windows Explorer has stopped working. APPCRASH explorer.exe 6.0.6000.16386 Fault mod: indwvm.dll_unloaded Pops up at startup Any help totally & absolutely appreciated Thanks Mr. Arnold Your feedback kept me trying things to fix problem. Eventually fixed it, fingers crossed - open internet explorer symbol bottom L.H.S of screen - type in computer then windows to access system32 where indwvm.dll is located - right click highlighted indwvm.dll to get toolbar - click properties at bottom noticed indwvm.dll was named indwvm.dll."wyo" or similar ending (can't remember) - renamed it indwvm.dll & - ticked box to make read-only & - open with notepad Don't know which one fixed it but suspect name change. Thanks again. Similar APPCRASH with faulty .dll problems may work with similar approach Hi ... I have the same problem , bt its not .db error , its says " Messahe centre ". cud u pls help me out. |

| Windows Explorer has stopped working
I have an HP Model a1767c Intel Core2CPU 4300 @ 1.8 GHz 1.80 GHz 2046 MB Windows Vista Home Premium I bought Vista with the computer and I already have files I don't want to delete and can't back up at this point. I've tried every proposed solution on every site I found in a search and nothing works. I've tried System Restore (it failed several times, now I can't even start it) I've tried opening Event Views (it doesn't open) I've tried runas /user:[username that has administrative rights] cmd" (I don't have a username with adminrights.) Please understand, I am not talking about Internet Explorer. That works fine. |

Hey brobkrbob-- We can fix this. BTW did you correctly type eventvwr.msc in the run box? Also while it can be helpful for errors, MSFT is still guilty of delivering many error messages in HEX or other language that requires special tools, and I've begun clicking on the links to explain the errors for a month and most of them yield "We have no solution at this time" LOL to the 64th-- as if they are ever going to have the solution to the error in their lifetime. The admin rights problem is not necessary to solve to fix this, however, it can easily be solved by right clicking the folder with whatever you want to run>properties>security tab>edit>add>enter users as obj. name>OK>apply. Reopen the dialogue box and close it. But to fixing your problem: Tip Sometimes system restore from the Win RE environment on the DVD where startup repair is located works when direct SR won't. Also you have 5 options at F8 including 4 Safe modes with which to access SR--I say this so you will know how to maximize your chances with system restore. Below are 10 ways to Fix Vista and this as well as instuctions on running SFC: You can run SFC that comes with Vista and several prior OS's but is changed in Vista under the hood. I would try running SFC and if you need to and have the Vista DVD (MSFT bullies most OEM named partners who sell PCs into not shipping it because they are greedy and lack ethics leaving their end users up a creek without a paddle when they need many of the tools to fix a no boot Vista). The man partially responsible for this is Scott Di Valerio the OEM VP at Redmond. He's the head of all the hard working OEM system builders and his computer engineering background consists of his accounting practice at MSFT--he done be accounting da money at the expense of the MSFT customer who pays one to four grand for a computer (except Dell with Vista). SFC or System File Checker is a bit like the spare tire in your car or a backup battery I suppose. In Vista of course, they have changed it somewhat and come up with a new name--Redmond stands for name it something different twice a year and now it's part of WRP or Windows Resource Protection. It scans protected resources including thousands of files, libraries, critical folders, and essential registry keys, and it replaces those that are corrupted with intact ones. It fixes a lot of problems in Windows XP, OE, Windows Vista, Win Mail, IE6, and on Vista or if it is installed on XP, IE7. It protects these things from changes by any source including administrators, by keeping a spare of most of them. How to Run SFC: Type "cmd" into the Search box above the Start Button>and when cmd comes up at the top of the Start menu>right click cmd and click "run as Admin" and when the cmd prompt comes up at the cmd prompt type "sfc /scannow" no quotes and let it run. This may fix things quite a bit. It replaces corrupt files with intact ones, if you're not familiar with it. If no help from SFC, you can try a restore point to before this happened or you try the steps below if you have a Vista DVD: Startup Repair will look like this when you put in the Vista DVD: http://www.vistaclues.com/wp-content...r-computer.png You run the startup repair tool this way (and system restore from here is also sometimes effective): |

| RE: Windows Explorer has stopped working.
Hi, I have been having this problem from the point I installed Vista. I had browsed through many suggestions and tried them out too but to no avail. In the end I came up with my own solution. This may work for some or may not work for others. My problem was actually related to yours. Whenever I used to access any Control Panel stuff with a Windows Explorer open I got a stop error message. But with no Windows Explorer open I was able to open Control Panel options just fine. It suddenly came to my mind that I should change Start Menu to Classic and then access Control Panel and viola. No errors for now. Hope it helps. |

We speak here about two different problems: a crash of the windows explorer and a "disppearance" of the desktop. The first can have many different causes: a virus, a compatibility problem by some programs... The second has only one: Microsoft! It happens often when I install a new program or when I modify anything by the taskbar's properties or.... The only solution that I found: ctrl+alt+del, then log off and then log on. I hope Microsoft has already took note of it and soon delivers a patch. Is it an older version of Norton? If it's so, Norton and other programms that are not Vista ready install drivers und libraries, that ain't compatible with Vista. Try pressing F8 before Windows starts and select the choice to start Windows without loading other drivers than the basics of Windows self. Than uninstall Norton. If you have CCleaner or other registry cleaner programm, you may also clean the registry file of the Norton entries. Last isn't necessary, but a good precaution. Good Luck! |

| Re: Need Immediate Assistance
I had the same problem. I have a workaround if System Restore fails to correct this. For me, It even occured in Safe Mode. 1. Make your way to starting Internet Explorer 2. on the address bar type:"control panel" 3. go to User Accounts...-> Add User account-> Create New "Admininstrator" Account. 4. Shut down manually if you have to and reboot and access the new Admin account You will now have new account with all original programs still installed and access to old files via either: a. Internet exporer-> Address bar-> type: C:\users\ your old user account name b Start button-> computer-> C:\Users\ you old user account name. * You'll find here folders which will contain you old docs, downloads, etc from you old account. |

HI, I'm having the same problem, suddenly without any obvious reason i have the message that internet explorer stopped working, then another message that the program will close and after that i'm not able to use internet explorer unless I restart and even sometimes i have to restore my pc to a previous date! I noticed that everytime i try to connect to my mails from windows live messenger this will happen. I have been using vista since March without any problem and didn't have that issue till the 17th of September so it should be a new patch that is causing that! I even reformatted my pc but again i got the same problem! I think microsoft ahould get involved in that!!!!! |

| Re: Windows Explorer has stopped working.
Try to run Internet Explorer without add-ons to see if an add-on is causing the problem. Start Orb > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). If this solves your problem, you can then enable add-ons one at a time until the problem recurs. |

| Windows Explorer has stopped working..
Hi, I am running windows vista home premium on my advent 7201 laptop. Just recently when I try to open certain folders in my pictures it freezes up and then a window opens saying that windows explorer has stopped working and is restarting. This happens each time I try to open the folders. Then today whilst trying to upload some picture for a listing on ebay there simply was no way of doing it! It was as if my pictures had gone (but they have'nt!) Then, when I clicked the X to close Internet explorer every open window closed at the same time.. Very frustrating! I have tried to use system restore to see if that helps but when the laptop starts up I have a window that reads, 'System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computers system files and settings were not changed. Details: An unspecified error occured during system restore.' Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. James. |
