More info

Well, I found that it was the Id3v2 tag called "composer" that was being disruptive. I used the tool called "MP3-Tag Studio 3" to remove that particular tag from all my MP3 files. All is right in the world once again.

Come to find that my MP3's had corrupted / malformed ID3 tags. For
some reason, nearly all of the files had a bad "Composer" tag in the
ID3v2 and WMP would refuse to read them. I used a tool called MP3 Tag
Studio 3" to remove just that piece and now my WMP works fine and
loads all of the files into the library (which I deleted earlier to
star fresh)
