Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware.

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Ok , as I have found out relatively quickly this is somewhat of a comm on
problem with Windows XP. All of the " generic "
Troubleshooting/Uninstall/Reinstall seem to be useless. I have however ,
Found a somewhat different solution and am looking for the answers ASAP. I
have found the solution of registry editing. Now mind you I know the whole
process of doing things. Just a simple question to be answered. When you go
into the registry the " solution " requires you to delete " UPPER " and "
LOWER " filters , follwed by a reboot. Now , while in the registry , The
upper filters are in the right hand column but I have found no " LOWER "
filters in all of the control sets ( i.e. Current control set , Control set
001 etc ) Is this a problem or can I simply delete the upper filters without
lower filters present? PLEASE get back to me asap.

The problem is this

I cannot see the CD-RW icon in My Computer

Yellow icon in device manager against the drive name.
Description shows
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

This happened after i upgraded to the WinXP from Win98
The drive had worked perfectly for past 4 years...till now. and now also I used it to install the same WinXP....10 min ago!!! So drive failure ruled out. BIOS shows drive correctly.

SysConfig:
Win XP SP2
AMD 2000
LG 52X-32X-10X CD-RW GCE8525B

This is What I have tried so far - and prblem not solved yet:

1. Rebooting : Didnt help

2. Removing and Reinstalling the drive in Device Manager : Not useful - it reloads the old drivers

3. Upgrading the driver : Win says it is having the best driver . will not upgrade.

4. The registry edit suggested on the various forums, including this one.

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}"

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320553/

In this I can not find the reg values mentioned .

UpperFilters and LowerFilters,

I searched. They are not present.!!!!

5. I have considered another solution suggested: The device Firmware upgrade for the CD-RW drive itself !! Found it on LG site. The warnings on the site freaked me out....Will it be really required ??

Now

I request all you good people out there to suggest me further.

I do not wish to re-install. Somehow i suspect a re-install will give same problem again. I am very scared to do that drive hardware upgrade . it may spoil the drive permanently.

Is a good driver of GCE8525B available for WindowsXP-SP2
and Is ther a way to force system to take this new driver?

I looked for soltiouns through windows and they had none. I am not great with computers so please respond with detailed help. It looks like Prasad was able to help many with the same problem I am having. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it

Re: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware.

So how old is Caitlyn.

On the DVD drive, have you tried uninstalling the drive in Device Manager
(the one with the yellow mark).

You get to the Device Manager by Start > Control Panel > System. Hardware
Tab. Click the Device Manager Button.

Open the branch that says DVD/CD ROM Drives.
Click the (+) to expand.

Right click on the entry select uninstall.

Reboot the computer.

What happens?

Windows should find new hardware and install the correct drivers. The
support for reading DVD/CD is built into Windows XP and Vista.

For burning you need better software and a drive that is a burner.
Burning software is Nero or Roxio.

Re: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware.

My guess is the drive has failed.
The course of action I suggest,
take the computer to dealer for repair.

I don't know if you have a laptop or a desktop computer.
Laptop computers are not consumer repairable, you must send to the
manufacturer repair station.

Desktop computer, you can replace the drive in the case.

I am at my wit's end. I've tried everything, I hope someone will come to my rescue.
Problem:
My LG CD/DVD rom (GH20LS15) suddenly stopped detecting on my computer after 6 months of working fine. I get a "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" message in Device Manager with a Yellow Exclamation mark.
Things I've tried:
1. Uninstalling driver, restarting computer (didn't work)
2. Tried following the http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314060 (neither method worked, I didn't have Upper or Lower Filters in my registry).
3. System restore (both unsuccessful attempts)
4. Restore computer to last know configuration (didn't work)
5. Swapping SATA ports, power cables (didn't work)
6. Contacting LG, asking them if I should update my firmware (they said no, and also said that it's not their problem; their drives are plug and play)

Notes of interest:
Running Windows XP Pro SP3

I have no idea where to turn next. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Good luck to anyone else who has the issue!!!

RE: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware.

Hi
I'm having the same issue but with Vista Home Prem 32,
CD/DVD as well as all disk drives are showing up in "device manager" as
"unknown"
I can't uninstall them to restart because of a "device install error" -
"Could not load the installer for CDROM.
