Error installing MTP device

Trying to install my new SanDisk Sansa M230 MP3 player. When I plug it into
the USB port Windows XP recognizes it as such. Then the "Found New Hardware
Wizard" comes up offering to help install software for: MTP Device. It gives
me the option of installing the software automatically (recommended) or from
a specific location (advanced).

I don't have any driver files (the CD that came with the player contains
only PDF user manual files), so I naturally accept the recommended otion. The
wizard goes off to search for the software, but after a short while the
Wizard comes back saying "Cannot Install this Harware: MTP Device". There was
a problem. An error occurred. "The specified service does not exist as an
installed service."

Can anyone here offer any help with this problem?

Just to clarify. I have Windows XP SP2 installed and WMP10
