No Hard Disk Found Error

I have a Window XP Media Center System. I have problem where i cannot
power up windows, not even in safe mode. The initial error was
SYSTEM_INITIALIZATION_FAILURE. In my attempts to get into safe mode i
recieved a File no found <windows root>\system32\hal.dll, then followed
with a No hard disk found. I have a restore disk and know how to
restore the system, however, i have some data on the hard disk that i
do not want to lose. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Re: No Hard Disk Found Error

Did you move the hard drive to your current system from another system?
If yes and from a different manufacturer then the lowest level hardware
dependent .dll may be the wrong ones.

Re: No Hard Disk Found Error

I didn't change any hardware in my system. The only possible software
installation were windows updates. They seem to happen automatically
and i don't always pay close attention when i agree to the updates.

Re: No Hard Disk Found Error

Your boot sector may need to be rewritten using the restore disk repair
options.
